The Novelis Bay Minette team is seeking a Metallographer. This role will play a key role in ensuring product quality and supporting process improvements through metallographic analysis. This role supports casting, rolling, and finishing operations by conducting microstructural evaluations, defect analysis, and lab-based investigations. The chosen candidate will be responsible for the daily operation of the Metallographic lab, supporting the setup of lab equipment (maintenance and calibration), monitoring lab consumable inventory, reviewing and analyzing test results, supporting qualification trials, supporting continuous process improvements, and assisting in root cause investigation for plant processes or quality concerns and customer claims. Key Responsibilities:
Serve as a safety role model, following Novelis Safety Absolutes and promoting a zero-injury culture. Ensure personal safety and physical and mental well-being, as well as that of colleagues and visitors in their area of expertise; use mandatory Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and guide others in its use. Preserve the environment and align with legal environmental requirements established in ISO and other specific standards. Perform metallographic sample preparation, etching, and analysis of aluminum alloys. Safely handle concentrated acids and create etchants for revealing microscopic characteristics Perform metallographic surveillance testing for quality control Operate and maintain optical and electron microscopes to assess grain structure, intermetallic, inclusions, and surface features. Perform a count, measure, and sizing of intermetallic phases and grain structures Investigate product defects and customer claims via examination of samples. Perform process history review and using knowledge of customer product processing operations to accurately identify potential root causes. Prepare laboratory analysis reports with supportive data and findings, making recommendations for plant operations, engineering, and customer technical services on suspected root causes and recommend remediation solutions. Provide technical support for customer claims, trials, qualifications, and product development projects. Establish and maintain a database of known source materials for root-cause analysis (via SEM-EDS and FT-IR) Perform cross-checks with other Novelis plants and ensure consistency and best processes. Promote technologies or solutions to increase process quality, throughput, and capability. Install and set up new equipment, develop work instructions, maintain lab instruments, and ensure maintenance and calibration records are up to date Train lab technicians on metallographic techniques and maintain training records. Maintain lab quality standards by supporting ISO audits, internal audits, and adhering to ASTM testing standards and ensure management of change documentation is recorded Support continuous improvement by finding opportunities to enhance throughput, accuracy, and capability. Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree or certificate in materials science, metallurgy, physics, chemistry, or related field; or 5+ years of hands-on experience in metallography. Experience in metallographic specimen preparation, etching, and optical microscopy. Familiarity with image analysis tools Knowledge of SEM/EDS, FT-IR, and other advanced characterization techniques Analytical Methods including Area-Threshold (phase-particle) analysis, grain size measurements (ASTM E112 intersection), basic micrograph distance measurements through ImageJ. Experience in maintaining calibration and quality records. Strong problem-solving, communication, and organizational skills. Ability to manage multiple priorities and contribute to cross-functional teams. What We Offer:

Novelis' newly announced Bay Minette facility will be located 35 miles northeast of Mobile AL and 45 miles west of Pensacola FL and is expected to create approximately 1000 high-paying advanced careers in modern manufacturing.
