Position Summary The Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) at Mayers Memorial Healthcare District is responsible for delivering essential basic life support services in pre-hospital environments to injured or ill patients. The role involves patient transport, medical assessment, and prioritizing treatment according to established protocols. In collaboration with paramedics or other EMTs, the EMT stabilizes and manages patient care during emergencies, mainly when staffed for basic life support (BLS). EMTs interact with a wide range of individuals, including medical staff, physicians, emergency service agencies, and ground ambulance personnel.

Key Responsibilities

Emergency Medical Care: EMTs provide pre-hospital care aligned with medical protocols and the local standard of care, serving as the primary care provider during BLS transfers or as determined by their paramedic partner.

Patient Transport: Operates ambulances and company vehicles following emergency driving guidelines set by the California Highway Patrol (CHP) and the Department of Transportation (DOT).

Professional Conduct: Maintains a professional and safe demeanor while interacting with patients, families, public agencies, co‑workers, and management.

Recordkeeping: Maintains accurate and timely medical documentation.

Education and Public Outreach: Acts as an educator to the public, students, and colleagues, providing feedback and promoting health education.

Collaboration: Works closely with other team members, including Emergency Department staff, especially during high patient volume.

Other Duties: Additional responsibilities may be assigned, including working overtime if required.

Qualifications And Experience

Certification Requirements: Valid EMT certification in California and from the Sierra Sacramento Valley (SSV) or other approved LEMSA. BLS/CPR certification from the American Heart Association is required.

Driving Licenses: Valid California Driver's License, clean driving record, and California Ambulance Driver's License with a Medical Examiner's Certificate.

Communication Skills: Excellent written and verbal communication skills are essential.

Attitude and Adaptability: Positive working attitude, self‑starter, and ability to adapt within a team‑based management structure.

Additional Skills (Preferred But Not Required)

Experience operating emergency vehicles, working in an Advanced Life Support (ALS) system, or having pre‑hospital and EMS experience.

Public education experience.

Physical Effort and Working Conditions The EMT role involves substantial fieldwork, including staffing, driving, and riding in ambulances. EMTs must operate under adverse working conditions such as high‑stress trauma scenes, poor weather, and potential exposure to blood, body fluids, and airborne pathogens. Physical endurance is required, including ability to walk, stoop, climb, twist, bend, run, squat, kneel, and lift or transfer patients using various methods such as gurneys, stretchers, and stair chairs.

Hazards Include

Operating and traveling in ambulances under emergency conditions.

Encountering confused or agitated patients.

Exposure to unknown diseases and trauma scenes.

Computer Use Requirements All EMTs must be proficient in using the healthcare district's computer systems to communicate and access important company information. They are responsible for regularly checking and responding to company emails and participating in any training programs related to patient care and privacy.

Patient Privacy Responsibilities The EMT must comply with the company's privacy policies and protect patient information as required by federal and state law. EMTs are authorized to access and share patient information only as needed and are expected to report any concerns or violations to the designated privacy officer. Participation in privacy training is mandatory.
