About the Unit 4West is a high acuity 21-bed progressive care unit that provides specialized nursing care for adult patients that require various oxygen therapies including BIPAP therapy, administration of titratable and non-titratable medications as well as administration of blood products. Cardiac patient diagnoses include post cardiac catheterization, myocardial infarctions, and congestive heart failure exacerbations. Pulmonary patients may include complications of chronic respiratory disease including cystic fibrosis, tracheostomy, interstitial lung disease, pulmonary emphysema, pulmonary fibrosis and other diseases affecting the lung.

The Registered Nurse (Hospital-Based) is a competent nurse delivering nursing care to patients of varying age groups by utilizing the nursing process and nursing practice standards. The RN uses nursing practice competencies, leadership competencies, professional profile competencies, and practice outcomes competencies to intervene, coordinate care, develop professionally, and evaluate care based on evidence and patient safety goals.

Essential Functions

Conducts systematic, continuous and comprehensive assessments of patient health status from admission to discharge, addressing age, gender, spiritual, cultural, physical, psychosocial and patient preferences; collaborates with the healthcare team, patient and family to ensure safety

Independently administers medications per licensure authority; assesses and documents effects in a timely manner; adheres to patient safety guidelines

Plans care with patient and family using current scientific knowledge and care standards; constructs individualized, age-specific plans and incorporates data from the multidisciplinary team

Collaborates with patient and family to identify and prioritize problems, goals and nursing interventions within the medical plan of care

Implements nursing interventions to meet patient and family needs; demonstrates clinical judgment and promotes patient safety

Assesses and evaluates patient and family teaching, adapting to age, learning needs and cultural background

Evaluates care outcomes and revises the plan with the care team to achieve desired outcomes; recognizes care variances and intervenes to prevent adverse events

Advocates for patient and family rights; prepares for discharge and seeks feedback to improve satisfaction

Collaborates with unlicensed assistive personnel according to regulatory requirements to ensure safe patient care

Other Functions

Demonstrates professional conduct and accountability for actions and outcomes

Orients new team members and may supervise students

May act as relief charge nurse when needed

Maintains professional competency through continuing education and licensure

Engages in evidence-based practice and stays current with standards

Communicates constructively within the healthcare team and participates in problem solving

Performs duties in a cost-effective manner while maintaining quality of care

Complies with all policies, procedures and HIPAA requirements

Performs other duties as assigned

Education

Associate’s Degree in Nursing from an accredited nursing program (required)

All new-hire Associate Degree RNs are required to start an approved BSN program within one year of hire and complete within three years (required)

Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing from an accredited nursing program (preferred)

Experience

All new RN graduates will participate in the Nurse Residency program (required)

Two years of hospital patient care experience (preferred)

Licensure

Current KY RN licensure or compact license with privileges to work in Kentucky (required)

Certification

Basic Life Support (BLS) by the American Heart Association (required)

Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) may be required for specific clinical areas

Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) may be required for specific clinical areas
