The YMCA of the Virginia Peninsulas is looking for a Cause-Driven Leader with a passion for health and wellness. The Wellness Experience Director is responsible for the overall daily operation of the wellness department, including financial growth, membership engagement, retention and growth, and supervision of all wellness programs. The role works closely with other center leaders to welcome, connect, support, and engage all members and staff.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in a wellness-related field or equivalent experience preferred.
Minimum three (3) years’ experience in Health & Wellness; certifications in ACE, AFAA, ACSM, or YMCA preferred.
Minimum two (2) years’ supervisory experience.
CPR/First Aid/AED/O2 certification required within 60 days of hire.
Ability to interact with people from diverse ethnic backgrounds, ages, and lifestyles.
Experience in program development.
Skills in development and implementation of wellness classes and activities, budgeting, hiring, training, supervision of staff and volunteers, and member recruitment and retention.
Knowledge of wellness equipment; experience in maintenance and repair of cardio and strength equipment preferred.
Complete and maintain trainings (e.g., New Employee Orientation, Bloodborne Pathogens, CAP, Sexual Harassment) upon hire and annually thereafter.
Successful completion of a criminal background check and Child Protective Services check.
Essential Functions
Support the mission, vision, and goals of the YMCA.
Promote character development and the values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility in all program areas.
Lead in a manner that strengthens the community through programs focused on youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility.
Participate in the Annual Giving Campaign as assigned by the Center Executive Director.
Assist in promoting YMCA membership and in recruiting and retaining members using retention tools available.
Program Development
Review and evaluate all programs to determine member satisfaction and ensure quality standards.
Organize, plan, promote, and schedule monthly programs including small community groups and annual events for the wellness department (group exercise).
Maintain knowledge of current trends in wellness, adult programming, and group exercise.
Direct and perform wellness orientations and evaluations to ensure quality and safe programming for members and participants.
Program Administration
Maintain accurate staff records and ensure certifications are current for self and staff to meet/exceed association guidelines.
Prepare annual budgets for program areas and address variances as needed.
Oversee care, maintenance, and storage of program supplies and equipment in line with the operating budget for the wellness center and studios.
Produce monthly department schedules and coordinate group exercise classes with instructors.
Ensure all materials align with Y branding and maintain correctly branded materials.
Input staff schedules into payroll, verify timesheets, and approve payroll each cycle.
Follow all association standard guidelines.
Team Leadership
Hire, develop, motivate, and retain a committed staff/volunteer team aligned with the YMCA’s mission.
Hold regular one-on-one meetings to gauge satisfaction and provide career development coaching/training.
Conduct regular department meetings to train, coach, and update on initiatives.
Provide leadership to the branch by participating in meetings and task forces to improve communication and quality.
Complete all job-related trainings as required.
Ensure a safe environment and adherence to the branch Emergency Operations Plan (EOP).
Participate in center leadership activities (e.g., Leader on Duty, occasional events).
Carry out related duties as needed by the wellness department.
