Overview
United Dairymen of Arizona (UDA) is a local, family-owned dairy cooperative committed to serving the needs of our members, community, and customers. As Arizona's only milk marketing co‑op, UDA oversees the production, processing, and marketing of high‑quality dairy products from farm to retail within 48 hours.
Job Summary The Lab Technician performs routine and specialized tests on raw materials, in‑process, and finished dairy products to ensure quality and safety standards are met. Responsibilities include analysis of fat, protein, pH, total solids, and screening for antibiotics and aflatoxins. The role requires strict adherence to SOPs, GLP, HACCP, UDA policies, and maintaining data integrity, good lab practices, and a clean work environment.
Primary Functions and Responsibilities
Assist in lab responsibilities related to the Butter operation, including sampling, sorting, compositing, and performing chemical and microbiological tests.
Aseptically handle and composite powder samples for microbiological and chemical testing.
Perform tests on raw materials and final products: total solids, fat determination, titratable acidity, pH, Kjeldahl protein, moisture, quality analysis.
Conduct antibiotic and aflatoxin testing.
Provide accurate results and maintain data integrity.
Participate in and pass proficiency exams.
Interact respectfully with coworkers, drivers, operators, management.
Maintain a clean and sanitary work area.
Adhere to all SOP, HACCP, UDA quality, safety, and GMP policies, reporting nonconformities.
Other duties as required.
Qualifications Skills & Abilities
Excellent prioritizing skills.
Detail oriented.
Ability to work 8‑hour shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
Ability to read, hear, speak, and comprehend written and verbal instructions and SOPs.
Clear understanding of Good Documentation Practices (GDP).
Team collaboration and communication.
Safe handling of chemicals and lab equipment.
Strong lab safety awareness and willingness to follow guidelines.
Compliance with Good Laboratory Practices (GLP).
Experience
General knowledge of dairy processing is helpful.
Science/lab background is helpful.
Knowledge of food manufacturing practices.
Education/Certifications
High School Diploma or Educational Equivalent.
Physical Requirements
Safe operation of equipment.
Work safely within the laboratory environment.
Visual monitoring of surroundings.
Stoop, bend, reach, lift and carry items up to 55 lb often.
Push and pull items frequently up to 55 lb.
Climb ladders and stairs, including floors up to 100 ft.
Hear and speak in noisy environments.
Work in extreme hot, cold, and wet conditions.
Work safely in confined spaces occasionally.
Handle hazardous chemicals safely.
