Job Title: Physical Therapist- PRN/Flex

Overview Confirm and interpret physician referrals, perform patient assessments and develop individualized treatment programs based on the patient’s developmental and/or chronological age and medical diagnoses in accordance with the regulations governing the principles and practice of Physical Therapy.

Responsibilities

Confirm and interpret physician referrals, perform patient assessments and develop individualized treatment programs based on age and diagnoses.

Provide patient care based upon physician referral and age‑appropriate assessment, planning and implementing treatment programs designed to achieve goals set in collaboration with patients and/or family members.

Coordinate patient care and clinical activities through written and/or verbal communication with patients, families, therapists, Clinical Team Leaders, managers, physicians and other members of the health care team.

Document in the patient’s medical record and complete other patient‑care‑related forms in compliance with regulatory agencies and department/hospital policies and procedures.

Supervise PTAs and collaborate with other therapy staff, support staff, volunteers and students to achieve efficient clinical activity and quality patient care.

Participate in other patient care and departmental/professional activities as requested or assigned, including but not limited to presenting/attending in‑services, performance improvement, program development/evaluation, new employee orientation, committee membership, peer review and attending staff meetings.

Supervise Physical Therapist Assistants (PTAs) as provided by State of Virginia licensure/practice standards and Federal regulations; orient new employees and may provide guidance to volunteers, students, support, or contract staff.

Provide communication, problem‑solving, consultation, advising or interpretation services to others, working with outside vendors as needed, while not having authority to commit for the organization.

Maintain confidentiality in accessing and exposing patient information required for performance of the job.

Suggest cost‑containment initiatives in the immediate work unit/department.

Within scope of license and age‑specific criteria, interpret physician orders, perform patient assessments, and plan and implement individualized patient treatment programs.

Impact of work is generally within the department or service line.

Working Conditions Work is performed primarily indoors in a clinical setting including hospital, nursing home or outpatient sites. Employees may be required to work at other Carilion facilities to meet staffing needs and may need to provide personal transportation. The role may also involve home care, driving program, hydrotherapy, or home evaluations. Physical activity with patients, including lifting, manipulating, pushing, pulling, bending, and walking, is required; patients may weigh over 200 pounds. Exposure to serious injury and environmental hazards (e.g., blood and bodily fluids) is possible. Home‑care providers must provide personal transportation and travel daily between patient homes.

Qualifications Education:

Graduate of an approved School of Physical Therapy. Bachelor's degree as Physical Therapist and 5 years of experience, OR Master’s or Doctorate degree required.

Experience:

Experience at site‑specific level of care preferred but not required. For Home Health positions one year of clinical experience is required.

Licensure, certification, and/or registration:

Licensed to practice in the Commonwealth of Virginia by the Virginia Board of Physical Therapy.

Life Support:

AHA BLS‑certified (from a Carilion approved program) within six months of employment.

Other Minimum Qualifications:

Effective interpersonal, communication, customer service and teamwork skills required.
