Improve quality and outcomes for the Cancer Institute across the Central Florida Division. Complete case finding, abstraction, longitudinal patient follow-up, and additional activities to meet standards set by the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer (ACoS CoC) and the Florida Cancer Data Systems (FCDS). Ensure all clinical elements accurately reflect the care provided by AdventHealth for accurate state, federal, and public reporting. Serve as the Cancer Registry content expert to review patient diagnosis, treatment, and outcomes across the care continuum. Alert leadership to potential discrepancies in documentation or clinical care variation as part of ongoing performance improvement. Participate in continuing education to stay current with changes in the cancer industry related to coding and compliance. The value you'll bring to the team
Identify potential cancer registry candidates in compliance with standards and abstracting rules from federal, state, and accrediting bodies. Abstract and clinically code accurate patient data using cancer classification and coding systems, current staging manuals, NCCN guidelines, and other reference manuals for all cancer patients treated at AdventHealth facilities. Identify clinical variability or discrepancies from national guidelines and escalate trends to leadership for timely intervention. Use independent judgement to categorize data elements and outcomes when conflicting information is present. Track cancer patients longitudinally at required intervals to maintain follow-up and meet regulatory deadlines (e.g., 30 days, 6 months, 1 year) using multiple communication channels. Maintain a professional work environment and perform independent validation of abstraction prior to registry submission; manage multiple priorities to meet harvest deadlines. Pursue ongoing clinical education to stay current with registry developments and national guidelines; attend conferences/trainings as appropriate. Participate in Quality Assurance peer review and timely correction of abstractions to meet registry guidelines. Engage in special projects or initiatives to improve quality and outcomes for cancer patients. Qualifications
Minimum qualifications: Associate's degree in Healthcare or Health Information Management Completion of education program and/or work experience required for Oncology Data Specialist Certified (NCRA) Two or more years of cancer registry abstraction experience Current and valid Oncology Data Specialist certification Strong understanding of complex medical conditions and surgical procedures to assess quality and outcomes Ability to make independent decisions considering internal/external clinical variables to follow national cancer guidelines Thorough understanding of Quality Measures as specified by the Commission on Cancer Thorough knowledge of Florida Cancer Data System (FCDS) Data Acquisition Manual (DAM) requirements Preferred qualifications: Bachelor's degree in Healthcare or Health Information Management Two or more years of abstracting experience in a CoC-approved Cancer Program Experience in a quaternary care hospital system Experience in a multi-campus healthcare system Knowledge of EMR systems such as CRStar, Cerner, ARIA, OncoEMR Benefits & Equal Opportunity
