Overview
Summary: Under supervision of the Manager Laboratory Outreach Services or guidance of the Lead Phlebotomist, performs responsibilities associated with obtaining blood and various other patient specimens in accordance with department procedures. Obtains samples ordered by physicians for routine and specialized tests on assigned unit. Takes samples from pediatric and adult patients on outpatient units. Transports specimens and completes basic records. Fosters patient- and family-centered care and nursing services in accordance with Brown University Health and The Miriam Hospital’s mission, values, and goals, with consideration of the life span and cultural patterns. Responsibilities
Perform functions associated with the computer system to ensure proper collection and documentation of patient specimens, including patient registration, identification, verification, and order entry.
Manage documentation such as Advanced Beneficiary Notice (ABN/SN) including codes, signatures, management, and scanning.
Carry out related clerical activities (medical necessity follow-up, filing, checklists, phone calls, report delivery, and admissions to clinical areas).
Maintain standing orders for expiration and renewal; provide patients with test forms and instructions for any special preparation.
Schedule venipunctures or capillary punctures based on test priority and type (including timed studies); ensure collection is in proper containers and meets collection requirements.
Identify patients and prepare them for procedures, advise nursing staff of deviations or adverse conditions, and collect samples from adults, children, and infants as required.
Collect other specimen types as needed (e.g., throat culture); process samples (e.g., centrifugation) and track specimens; obtain samples for specialized tests (e.g., thyroid releasing hormone, therapeutic drug monitoring, D-Xylose tolerance).
Label, wrap, and transport samples according to type and urgency; maintain records of sample procurement.
Register patients and order tests per policy; conduct insurance and demographic information gathering as necessary.
Follow universal precautions and hospital policies in all duties.
Minimum Qualifications
Education: High school diploma or GED required. Phlebotomy certificate from the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences or completion of a Phlebotomy certificate program with internship demonstrating 100 successful venipunctures. If internship is not completed, 6 months of phlebotomy experience may be considered. If no phlebotomy certification, 5+ years direct phlebotomy experience may be considered.
Experience: Ability to perform venipuncture and capillary puncture on adults, children, and infants. Strong interpersonal skills to communicate procedures and reduce anxiety. Knowledge of aging, development, and cultural considerations in patient care. Clerical skills including record maintenance and basic data entry. Familiarity with blood collection equipment, anticoagulants, and related safety considerations. Ability to distinguish colors. A Phlebotomy certificate is required.
Work Environment and Physical Requirements Works in an in-patient care environment with significant walking between units; may involve physical effort with uncooperative patients. Exposure to odors and potential exposure to communicable diseases, mitigated by infection control procedures. Requires manual dexterity for venipuncture.
Compensation and Scheduling Pay Range:
$17.69–$27.90
