Athletic Trainers work closely with coaches, parents and medical teams to prevent injuries and provide care daily.

Under the direction of the Associate Director of Athletic Training Services, the outreach athletic trainer is responsible for day-to-day medical coverage in collegiate and/or professional sports settings. Responsibilities include injury prevention, human movement correction, clinical evaluation, treatment, rehabilitation, and reconditioning. This role may involve developing the next generation of professional footballers and ensuring appropriate return-to-play decisions. The position also manages head injuries/concussions and referrals to appropriate medical professionals, and works collaboratively with the Sports Medicine Team to ensure service excellence for all customers of the athletic training outreach program.

Major Responsibilities

Provide athletic training services to collegiate and/or professional sport events as determined necessary to attain departmental goals of community service.

Work within the Sports Medicine Team concept and assist with event coverage as necessary to attain departmental goals of community service.

Provide acute medical care to athletes on the field during practices or sporting events.

Provide clinical athletic training services in local orthopedic clinics (as necessary).

Provide on-site recognition, evaluation, and immediate care procedures of illness and injury, including emergency situations.

Perform clinical injury evaluation and assessment of patient's level of function and follow standardized clinical practice in diagnostic reasoning and medical decision making.

Determine appropriate therapeutic treatment and provide rehabilitation, and/or reconditioning strategies, and taping/wrapping and bracing for preventative and protective treatment.

Implement treatment program objectives including long- and short-term goals and assess effectiveness of the program.

Collaborate with directing physician, recommend discontinuation of athletic training service when patient has received optimal benefit, and document final assessment of patient status.

Determine return-to-play standards of injuries for athletes and the active population.

Maintain daily records of treatment logs, injury reports, referrals, and medical inventory management per clinic standards.

Complete set-up of practice and games including medical supplies, equipment, hydration, cryotherapy, and other supplies necessary for adequate coverage.

Assist with planning, organizing, implementing and compliance of departmental policies.

Ensure an Emergency Action Plan for each venue, discussed with the Athletic Director, coaches, and athletes, including local EMS.

Assist with preparation of lectures, sports medicine programs, seminars and serve as a presenter when needed.

Mentor and manage on-site education of students and other healthcare professionals at outreach events (if applicable).

Ensure all athletic training room sites have appropriate supplies and equipment; recommend new equipment as needed.

Develop physician referral network including family practice, orthopedic, physical therapy and other specialties as needed.

Facilitate patient entry into the healthcare system and track these referrals.

Maintain training on concussion education, management, and care, including acute cervical spine management.

Adhere to departmental dress code when providing on-site Athletic Training services.

Perform other related clinical duties as required by state medical and athletic training regulations.

Minimum Job Requirements Education

— Minimum of a bachelor's degree in athletic training from a CAATE-accredited program.

Certification / License

— Current BOC athletic training certification. Currently licensed or eligible for a North Carolina License in Athletic Training within 30 days of hire. Ability to complete American Heart Association Healthcare Provider (BLS) CPR/AED within 30 days of hire.

Work Experience

— Experience as a BOC Certified Athletic Trainer preferred; ability to work independently.

Knowledge / Skills / Abilities

Excellent leadership and decision-making skills; strong problem-solving abilities.

Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

Strong communication with staff, coaches, physicians, families, and the healthcare team.

Maintain confidentiality (FERPA/HIPAA) in matters relating to employees, partners, patients, families, and visitors.

Ability to understand and communicate medical terminology to patients and professionals.

Team-oriented with ability to cover events as needed.

Effective conflict resolution and collaboration skills; maintain competencies for the position.

Ability to work with diverse populations; excellent oral and written communication.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

Set hours may vary; some night and/or weekend work required.

On-site coverage in school athletic facilities.

Ability to manage a stressful work environment with interruptions; athletic fields may be noisy.

Situational awareness and potential exposure to infections; may encounter emergencies.
