Postdoctoral Research Associate - Continually Monitoring and Updating Multi-modal AI Models
Join Dr. Tom Hartvigsen’s research group in the University of Virginia’s School of Data Science as we develop machine learning methods for dermatologists to continually update multimodal models.
About the Position The postdoctoral research associate will work on novel model editing methods for vision–language models and develop inherently‑editable architectures for continuous updates during deployment. Responsibilities include developing and evaluating machine learning methods, validating on dermatology data, collaborating with clinicians to translate methods into practice, communicating results to team members, and disseminating findings through publications and presentations.
Minimum Qualifications
PhD in computer science, data science, or related field
Effective written and verbal communication skills
Robust machine learning and natural language processing skills
Proficient computer programming skills
Preferred Qualifications
Track record of top‑tier machine learning publications
Experience with machine learning on medical images
Experience designing language model or vision–language model architectures
Excellent analytical, problem‑solving, critical‑thinking, and communication skills
Ability to work independently, collaboratively, and creatively
Physical Demands This is a primarily sedentary, desk‑based role that may require occasional travel for meetings and conferences.
Position Details This full‑time, in‑person position is located at the School of Data Science in Charlottesville, VA. The initial appointment is for one year, with the possibility of renewal for an additional year contingent on funding and performance. It is an exempt, benefited position that sponsors work visas and is term‑limited.
Anticipated Annual Salary $60,000
Anticipated Start Date January 2026
