Responsibilities

Assist Infection Preventionists in evaluating risks to patients and employees after exposure to infectious diseases and initiate work-up as necessary.

Communicate infection control problems to hospital staff and facilitate application of policies and procedures to unique situations.

Participate in environmental rounds and monitor compliance with established policies and procedures.

Complete NHSN surveillance, enter data into the database, produce reports, and interpret results.

Review microbiology reports and identify unusual species of bacteria and antimicrobial resistance patterns requiring isolation or follow-up per policy.

Complete daily isolation rounds and document findings; adhere to internal department policies.

Support education and training activities related to infection prevention for clinical staff and other personnel; participate in skill-appropriate education and surveillance training as applicable.

Collaborate with ICHE personnel to guide infection prevention methods within the UTMB healthcare system.

Lead or contribute to projects to prevent healthcare-associated infections, improve policy compliance, or support antimicrobial stewardship; assist with on-call rotations as needed.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in nursing, medical technology, or related field (as applicable to role level).

Two (2) years of related infection control or nursing experience for Infection Preventionist I; four years of infection prevention or two years nursing experience for higher levels; Master’s degree preferred for some senior roles.

Certification in Infection Control (CIC) required or must be achieved within specified timeframe after hire (as applicable).

Education & Experience by Level

Associate Infection Preventionist : Bachelor’s degree in nursing, medical technology, or related field. No experience required.

Infection Preventionist I : Minimum qualifications as above; two (2) years of related experience; CIC required or to be obtained within 1 year of hire for nursing applicants.

Infection Preventionist II : Bachelor’s degree in Health/Science; four years of infection prevention or two years of nursing experience (equivalent to 2 years infection prevention). CIC required.

Senior Infection Preventionist : Bachelor’s degree in Health/Science; five years of infection prevention or three years of nursing experience; CIC required; Master’s degree preferred.

Job Summary Infection Preventionist identifies and controls infections within the hospital and clinics; collaborates with Healthcare Epidemiologist and clinicians to implement preventive measures.

Essential Job Functions

Conduct education and training on infectious diseases or control methods; share information with staff.

Maintain hand hygiene and daily isolation rounds; document findings.

On-call coverage as requested.

Licenses, Registrations, Certifications

Certification in Infection Control (CIC) required.

Applicable nursing certification requirements: nursing applicants may be required to achieve certification within one year of hire.
