Laboratory Animal Resources/Research Resources – Rodent Animal Care Technician (Animal Technician II) Work Hours:

6:00 AM to 2:30 PM, Monday through Friday, with supervisor scheduled weekends, holidays, weather emergencies, and university closings. Summary: The Laboratory Animal Resource (LAR) group at Princeton University is a centralized administrative department reporting to the Dean for Research. It is responsible for the animal and veterinary care of all research animals at Princeton University. The Animal Technician for the Life Sciences Complex provides state-of-the-art animal care for laboratory animals housed within these facilities. He/she receives direction from the LAR Facility Manager. The primary responsibility is to care for various laboratory species, primarily rodents. The Animal Technician ensures the cleanliness of the facility and maintains adequate supplies of food, bedding, and PPE. The technician works according to a schedule prepared by the LAR Manager and must be willing to rotate through all LAR facilities. The position involves improving methods of animal husbandry and resource utilization, ensuring high-quality laboratory animal care, and effective communication with co-workers, management, PIs, research staff, students, and support services. The technician reports directly to the Facility Manager. Animal Husbandry: Animal Technicians are considered essential services staff, performing jobs necessary to maintain basic university operations during closures due to emergencies or other situations. Provides animal care for all species housed according to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), including feeding, watering, cage changing, sanitizing supplies, maintaining clean animal and support areas, and record-keeping. Completes work promptly, following SOPs and instructions. Monitors animal health and welfare daily, reporting sick or dead animals to researchers and Veterinary Services, and providing prescribed treatments. Monitors, documents, and reports deviations in environmental parameters such as temperature, humidity, lighting, and air quality. Provides environmental enrichment tailored to species and research needs, under Veterinary Services' guidance. Conducts AM and PM animal health observations. Operates cage washing machinery, ventilated caging, watering systems, bedding dispensers, autoclaves, and other equipment safely. Assists with transgenic rodent colony management, including tissue sampling, setting up matings, weaning, and data tracking in software applications. Reports facility maintenance issues to the Lead Animal Technician and Facility Manager.
