Assists in nursing care activities and institutional services in the operating room under the direction of a Registered Nurse and according to departmental policies. Performs “scrub” duties and specific institutional nursing services duties appropriate and authorized by the situation.
Requirements
Education: High school graduate or equivalent. Job Related Skills: Knowledge of surgical scrub duties preferred. The ability to comprehend and follow written and verbal instructions. Licensure, Registry or Certification: None required. Experience: Operating room experience preferred. Physical and Mental Requirements: Duties of the position required extended periods of standing and walking. Bending, stooping, twisting, reaching, pulling and pushing when handling instruments. Must be able to manipulate, position and transfer various size patients in the bed, to and from surgery bed and to and from wheelchair.
Essential Responsibilities
Assists in helping the surgeon and accomplish a plan of care for the patient. Performs delegated duties as a “scrubbed” member of the surgery team, including preparing the room, supplies, and equipment for the patient, assisting in preparing the preoperative site and draping the patient according to established procedure to provide an ample sterile field. Carries out nursing activities required during operations pertaining to such items as handling of instruments, sponges, sutures, catheters, drains, and dressings in such a manner as to ensure medical and surgical asepsis and safety to the patient. Initiate corrective action when breaks in technique occur. Cleans room between cases and at the end of the schedule, including bagging of soiled linens, disposing of soiled gloves, and debris, transporting soiled instruments to the proper utility area and unused supplies to the proper storage area. Operate sterilization and/or disinfection of mechanical, electrical, and air-powered equipment, according to manufacturer’s instructions. Provides care appropriate for the neonate pediatric, adolescent, and geriatric patients served based on demonstrated knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span. Assesses and interprets data on neonate and the pediatric, adolescent, and geriatric patients’ status to identify patients’ requirements relative to their age-specific needs and provides care needed as stipulated in departmental policy Assists in lifting and transporting patients and transporting specimens. Assist with transport of patients from the nursing unit to the operating room, from the operating room to the recovery room and from the recovery room to the patient room, if instructed to do so. Assists in the preparation of specimens and transporting them to a designated area. Assists in the preparation of equipment and supplies. Cleans soiled instruments according to policy, using washer sterilizer and/or ultrasonic cleaner, checks for defective items, assembles clean instruments in trays, and store special items in designed areas. Selects and transports required operative setup to rooms for specific case. Sterilizes and disinfects instruments prior to procedure if necessary. Tests operational efficiency of equipment prior to and after each case and reports problems to the maintenance department. Restock rooms according to established standards. Takes inventories and restocks equipment and supplies. Prepares drugs and solutions as directed by the RN for sterile field, reading label of drug with the RN to verify correct drug and dosage. Assists surgeons. Assembles and prepares setup interpreting surgeon’s preference as well as individual case requirements. Assists surgeon during procedures. Counts instruments, needles, and sponges with the registered nurse prior to and following procedure according to policy and procedure. Maintains confidentiality while working with confidential matters on a daily basis. Provides service direct to patients while maintaining a positive patient relations atmosphere. Interacts with patients, family members, and medical staff members on a continuous basis. Follows aseptic procedures and procedures for using precautions when involved in direct patient contact or handling potentially infectious materials. Follows safety guidelines and policies for the Hospital District.
