Role Overview The Transportation Maintainer 3 (Skilled Tree Climber) supports highway operations by performing skilled tree and landscape maintenance along roadways, removing hazardous trees, trimming, and ensuring public and crew safety. In addition to tree work, the position also participates in snow and ice removal, storm cleanup, guardrail repair, and operation of construction equipment, and may respond to traffic accidents.
Responsibilities
Perform routine tree and landscape maintenance along roadways.
Remove hazardous, dead or dying trees to improve safety and visibility.
Trim or cut back trees, limbs and brush to maintain clear zones and signage visibility.
Assess trees for hazards and determine if trimming or removal is needed.
Use climbing gear, safety lines, and specific knots safely when working in trees or from a bucket truck.
Operate and maintain equipment such as chainsaws, pole pruners, harnesses, bucket trucks and other safety gear.
Ensure public and crew safety during all tree operations.
Participate in snow and ice removal operations and assist with storm cleanup.
Remove fallen trees and branches, patch potholes, maintain roadsides, install or repair guardrails, and operate construction equipment.
Respond to traffic accidents as needed.
Eligibility Requirements
Current CDL with tank endorsement (Class A or B) and valid Medical Examiner’s Card (MEC).
Willingness to accept emergency duties, including snow and ice removal from November 1 – April 30.
20‑mile residency requirement from the posted job location.
Must be able to provide a copy of the Master Application at interview and demonstrate proven skills through a practicum evaluating aerial bucket truck and fall protection competence.
Must hold required licenses, permits, or certifications for aerial bucket truck and fall protection unless otherwise specified.
Must be a current State of CT employee with at least six months of full‑time service.

Monday‑Friday, full‑time (40 hours/week).
First shift: 7:30 am – 4:00 pm.
Location: East Great Plains (Norwich) Maintenance Facility.

Minimum Qualifications
Two (2) years of experience in construction, landscaping, commercial driving, snow plowing, or maintenance of roadsides, roadways, bridges, or airports, involving operation and care of mechanical equipment.
Graduation from a vocational or technical school designated in a maintenance trade may substitute general experience.
Preferred Qualifications
Skilled tree‑related work experience.
Skilled tree‑climbing experience.
Special Requirements
Must possess and retain current licenses, permits, or certifications as required.
Willingness to accept emergency duties, including snow and ice removal.
Character Requirements
Background investigation may be conducted prior to appointment.
Physical Requirements
Adequate physical strength, stamina, agility, visual and auditory acuity required.
Physical examination will be required.
Working Conditions
Exposed to extremes of weather, heavy lifting, high‑danger road and traffic conditions, heights, poison ivy, insect bites, and loud machinery.
May be required to complete asbestos removal and use respiratory and safety equipment.
