Overview
The Substation Civil/Structural Design Engineer will be responsible for the civil and structural engineering design and analysis of high-voltage electrical power substation facilities. The role ensures all designs comply with applicable industry codes, safety standards, and utility requirements. The engineer will provide technical support throughout all project phases—from concept development and detailed design through construction and commissioning. Key Responsibilities
Lead the civil/structural engineering design and analysis for electrical power substation projects. Develop and review design drawings, specifications, analysis reports, and construction documents in compliance with ACI, AISC, ASCE, and local building codes. Perform structural analysis and calculations, including shielding and lightning protection studies. Execute load calculations, finite element modeling, nonlinear analysis, and dynamic response evaluations. Design and specify foundations, steel structures, and other substation civil/structural components. Provide engineering support during construction and commissioning, addressing design changes and field issues. Collaborate with electrical engineers, project managers, and contractors to ensure design integration and project success. Required Qualifications
Extensive experience in heavy civil, structural, and mechanical engineering with working knowledge of electrical systems. Proven expertise in structural design of electrical power substations, including preparation of detailed drawings, specifications, and contract documents. Proficiency in AutoCAD and specialized foundation/structural analysis software such as STAAD.Pro, SAP2000, and ETABS. Strong understanding of industry standards and codes (ACI, AISC, ASCE, and local building codes). Demonstrated ability to conduct load calculations, finite element modeling, and nonlinear/dynamic analysis. Excellent communication and documentation skills with the ability to work in a multidisciplinary project environment. Preferred Qualifications
Experience providing engineering support from concept through commissioning on high-voltage substation projects. Familiarity with utility practices and regulatory compliance requirements. Professional Engineer (P.E.) license or ability to obtain is a plus. Seniority level
