Upper Darby Township is hiring a Construction Inspector to ensure every sidewalk, street, and stormwater system meets top-tier standards for the residents who rely on them. The Construction Inspector performs the technical work inspecting street and highway construction and repair projects. The inspector is responsible for overseeing the workmanship to ensure compliance with specifications and standards and notifying contractors of non‑conformity with contractual agreements.
Duties and Responsibilities
Inspect contact construction and repair work of township streets, sidewalks curbs, gutters and driveways.
Ascertain whether lines and grades conform to plans and specifications.
Observe materials being laid, finished and compacted to insure proper quantity and quality and adequate workmanship.
Inspection of pedestrian and vehicular bridges.
Inspection of Stormwater management systems on post construction sites.
Inspection of stormwater management systems on active construction sites to insure the proper installation of approved systems.
Inspection of Stormwater outfalls and facilities in compliance with MS4 program. May include outfall screening, water sampling, etc. for illicit discharge detection.
Inspection of annual street resurfacing program. • Notify appropriate personnel when traffic and street signs need maintenance.
Perform an annual street pavement evaluation and ranking.
Under the direction of the Director of Public Works, confers with contractors to explain and interpret specifications and standards; inform contractors of areas of non‑compliance, advises contractors as to methods, procedures and practices to meet the standard. Makes follow‑up inspections to see that errors are corrected; rejects unsatisfactory materials.
Prepares progress reports. Keep records on assigned projects; maintain log of construction and inspection activities; upload photographs and reports to tracking database.
Attend job meetings with contractors and the Director of Public Works.
May visit sites of accidents in which the Township is involved in litigation; observes currently physical conditions at sites, draws diagram of site indicating pertinent physical features, dimensions and distances.
High School diploma or GED equivalent
Two years of experience in street or highway construction and repair
Possession of a LTAP certificate
Valid driver's license and clean driving history
Ability to physically perform the duties and to work in the environmental conditions required of a position in this class
Preferred Education and Experience
At least one year of experience as an Inspector
Applicants with the following Penn DOT certifications will be given favorable consideration:
Construction Supervision
Bituminous Field Technician
Schedule/ Other Information Monday-Friday 7:00AM - 3:30PM
This is a full-time, Union position with a 40-hour work week. The pay rate is $34.67 per hour. *NOTE as a union position, this role will be paid $5,000 less for the first six months.
