Expleo USA Inc is seeking a skilled Mechanical Design Lead to lead the transformation of historical 2D engineering drawings into accurate 3D models using SolidWorks. This role combines advanced CAD design with light project management and hands‑on mechanical work, serving as the primary technical contact for the client and internal teams.
Responsibilities
Convert legacy 2D drawings (including hand‑drawn blueprints) into detailed 3D CAD models and assemblies.
Use advanced SolidWorks surfacing tools to recreate complex geometries.
Perform assembly fit checks, GD&T reviews, and tolerance stack‑up analyses.
Disassemble mechanical assemblies to support reverse engineering and modeling efforts.
Perform or support 3D scanning activities to capture geometry for CAD reconstruction.
Manage drawing revisions and engineering change documentation.
Support prototype builds and incorporate feedback into updated designs.
Ensure quality standards and client specifications are met for final releases.
Coordinate project timelines, updates, and stakeholder communications.
Mentor junior designers or offshore CAD support (if applicable).
Qualifications
Bachelor’s in Mechanical Engineering or related field (or equivalent experience).
3+ years in mechanical design/CAD, with strong SolidWorks expertise.
Experience interpreting legacy hand‑drawn engineering drawings.
Proficiency in surface modeling and complex geometry creation.
Familiarity with cast and machined parts, GD&T, and tolerance analysis.
Experience with PDM systems and drawing revision control.
Strong communication, problem‑solving, and project coordination skills.
Ability to work independently and manage design deliverables.
Essential Skills
Hands‑on experience disassembling mechanical assemblies, using basic hand tools and mechanical fastener systems.
Ability to support or perform 3D scanning using handheld or stationary scanning equipment (e.g., structured light or laser scanners).
Comfortable working in a shop or lab environment to inspect, measure, and handle physical parts.
Capable of squatting, kneeling, and standing for extended periods during disassembly or scanning tasks.
Able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs. safely as part of handling mechanical components.
Willingness to perform light manual labor as needed to support design and prototyping activities.
Desired Skills
SolidWorks Certification (CSWP/CSWE), especially in surfacing.
Knowledge of DFM, prototyping, and manufacturing processes.
Background in rail or heavy equipment industries.
Familiarity with project management tools.
Willingness to travel occasionally for client meetings or part inspections.
