Job Summary The Industrial Controls Technician I assists in the design, assembly, testing, and operation of new machinery, work cells, and industrial equipment. This role includes controls development, coordinating equipment construction, and implementing safety solutions. The technician works closely with internal teams to ensure the successful installation and operation of equipment while staying current with industry advancements to improve plant productivity and efficiency.
Responsibilities
Utilize the CAD system to complete new mechanical and electrical drawings required for individual projects, including new machines and system upgrades.
Oversee the construction and assembly of equipment designed in‑house, ensuring compliance with design specifications and safety standards.
Ensure all equipment designs comply with relevant safety requirements.
Communicate and enforce company policies and procedures related to machine operation and safety.
Lead design and implementation of new system controls.
Keep abreast of new products and technology in the Plant Engineering and Maintenance fields.
Collaborate with outside contractors – including getting bids, overseeing installations, and/or repairing equipment by third‑party providers.
Evaluate current manufacturing processes and foundry systems for control improvements and efficiency gains.
Become proficient in the application of robotic and vision systems to use them in the design of equipment and cells.
Develop proficiency in using various types and styles of programmable controllers, including PLCs for system control and automation.
Perform additional tasks as assigned by management, including supporting general maintenance activities, project management, and continuous improvement efforts.
Education / Requirements
Associate’s Degree or technical diploma in electrical engineering, industrial automation, mechatronics, or a related field is typically required, although equivalent military or industrial experience may be considered.
Minimum of 3‑5 years of hands‑on experience with industrial control systems, including troubleshooting, programming, and maintenance of PLCs, HMIs, and VFDs.
Experience with Allen‑Bradley, Siemens, or similar control systems is preferred.
Having an industrial electrician or controls technician certification is a plus; relevant safety certifications such as OSHA and NFPA 70E are advantageous.
