Central / West Tunnel Practice Lead
Join HDR as a leadership role focused on hydraulic tunnel engineering within the Central and West Regions. This key position leads some of the largest infrastructure projects, overseeing design, construction, and client relationships for tunnel and trenchless projects. Primary Responsibilities
Direct involvement and oversight on select tunnel projects to manage tunnel‑related services. Advise on and review alternatives analyses and feasibility studies related to tunnels. Manage risk and risk awareness of the Water Business Group tunneling portfolio. Vet subconsultants and work with teams for subconsultant risk management including required quality assurance activities and scope provisions. Assess and enhance HDR’s capabilities regarding tunnel construction and trenchless technologies including expertise with Sequential Excavation Method (SEM) and the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM). Collaborate with HDR’s WBG Tunnel Practice Lead and Geotechnical Cross‑Sector team. Verify qualifications and training of field staff assigned to construction phase tunnel services. Secondary Responsibilities
Provide cost engineering support. Manage skills and bench depth for tunnel instrumentation, mechanical, civil, and consulting design support. Assess terrestrial and marine construction capabilities. Support numerical modeling for ground/structure interaction and underpinning of buildings and utilities. Coordinate production of design calculations, contract documents, and design products. Conduct site characterization and geotechnical evaluations. Support construction engineering and inspections. Address resiliency, operations, and emergency response issues. Preferred Qualifications
Master’s degree in engineering or related field. U.S. focused tunneling design and construction experience. Leading design and construction of major tunnel and underground projects. Rock mechanics, soil mechanics, and geotechnical engineering experience. Experience with SEM, NATM, SCL, EPBM, and cut‑and‑cover techniques. Technical publication and presentation track record. Ph.D. in engineering or related field (optional). Staff management, client, contract, and hiring experience in an engineering consulting firm. Business development skills and industry contacts. Experience with numerical analysis (FLAC, UDEC, PHASES2, PLAXIS 2D & 3D, MODFLOW, etc.). Ground‑structure interaction modeling experience. Large‑scale underground project, urban tunneling, tunnel rehabilitation experience. Construction or contractor experience. Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in engineering. 10 years related experience. Minimum 5 years project management experience. Professional engineer license recognized by the local licensing board.
