Position Summary: Control Electrician B is a non-exempt position in the construction, maintenance and repair of substation electrical equipment/systems. Control Electrician B has a 4-6 year working knowledge of 525 kV and below substation electrical equipment, apparatus, and wiring. This position requires work in confined spaces and in elevated work areas, and works with various pieces of construction equipment specific to the trade. The electrician is expected to understand Electrical Theory with an emphasis on AC, DC circuits, transformers, breakers, etc. The job may require installing over current/recloser schemes and a complete understanding of PLC logic. The role may require working independently or with others, and occasionally long hours during emergency conditions. The position should be able to coach subordinates on the crew.
Essential Functions
Works safely while performing new construction, maintenance or repair, testing, adjusting and troubleshooting work of substation electrical equipment/systems, which includes but is not limited to the following:
Responsible for maintaining Company vehicles, test equipment and tools in good working conditions
Frequently works in close proximity of energized components with control systems requiring skill and care to protect the client from outages and the lives of themselves and others
Minimum Requirements
Able to perform rigorous physical labor
Must be capable of climbing and working at heights up to 60 feet above ground
Must possess or be capable of obtaining a Commercial Drivers’ License
Must supply own personal hand tools required by the company for this work
Must supply own safety-toed work boots
Must be capable of lifting in excess of 50 lbs
Must be capable of working in confined spaces/areas
Must be able to work independently or with others
Operational experience of various types of heavy equipment: Backhoes, excavators and skid steer loaders; Articulating Man-lifts; Trenchers; Rough Terrain Telescopic Forklifts
Willing to work over-time or long hours during emergency conditions and/or when requested. Schedules can change frequently and with short notice
90% travel required
Capable of following Company safety rules and policies
Must have knowledge of construction standard practices, techniques, quality requirements, applicable electrical codes and standards
Must be capable of working in close proximity of energized substation equipment
Must be capable of interpreting substation electrical drawings and communicate with customers and subordinates
Capable of accurately appraising technical situations
Must be able to coach subordinates on the crew
Must be able to develop and interpret a material list
Must be able to trace out phasing in a substation and verify to the three line diagrams
Retained knowledge in all aspects of substation electrical systems
Capable of leading the job for brief durations
Knowledge in the use of voltmeters, meggers, amp meters, and rotation meters
Neatly terminate, connect and bundle control wiring
Proper use of basic rigging (slings and clevis) and proper hand signals
Properly terminate and ground control cables in control panels and equipment
Basic operational knowledge of substation equipment (Transformers, breakers, capacitors)
Basic knowledge of IEEE device numbering standards
Able to recognize, correct and document errors/changes in engineering drawings
Basic computer skills (Excel, Word, Outlook)
Willing to work outside of the normal work schedule including weekends, holidays, and overtime as required for the position

Work Environment While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles, moving mechanical parts and vibration. The employee is occasionally exposed to a variety of extreme conditions at construction job sites. The noise level in the work environment and job sites can be loud. This position is performed in outside weather conditions.
