CT Heavy Equipment Mechanic Department of Transportation – Caltrans. Position code JC-496643. Salary: $5,608.00–$6,723.00 per month. Final filing date: 11/5/2025.

Job Description and Duties As a Heavy Equipment Mechanic, you will work in a shop or field environment under the direction of a Highway Mechanic Supervisor or a Caltrans Heavy Equipment Mechanic Leadworker. Responsibilities include:

Construct, inspect, diagnose, repair, and service various equipment used in the Department's fleet.

Complete records and reports and perform computer‑based tasks.

Assist in instructing or directing helpers, apprentices, or other employees.

Operate tools and equipment safely, ensuring proper use of PPE.

Provide support at field mechanic locations or highway maintenance stations, working in inclement weather.

Assist with daily shop operations as needed.

Working Conditions Work in a shop with occasional field time; exposure to dirt, noise, uneven surfaces, hazardous materials, temperature changes. Work may involve short duration in the field and shift/rotation changes.

Minimum Requirements Applicants must have a valid California Class C driver’s license and be eligible for the Caltrans Heavy Equipment Mechanic exam. Minimum qualifications are listed in the class specification.

Special Requirements

Valid California CDL required.

Must pass a drug screening before hiring.
