Boiler Plant Equipment Mechanic – U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Location:

VA Medical Center, St. Louis, MO

Pay Range:

$33.53/hr – $39.13/hr (Base) – Additional range provided by VA.

Summary:

Employee will be assigned to Facilities Engineering to provide equipment replacement, maintenance, repair, and operations for boiler plant and air conditioning equipment.

Responsibilities

Maintain and repair boiler plant equipment: high-pressure boilers, storage tank deaerator, pre-heater, steam station, flow controls, water softener, high-pressure pumps, air compressor, and related controls.

Disassemble and repair heavy industrial heating equipment and units.

Use solvent to clean fireboxes and perform reassembly.

Repair fire boxes under boilers and wash boilers.

Overhaul feed water pumps, condensate return pumps, brine pumps, and fuel oil pumps (steam or electrically driven).

Assist Utility Systems Operator with testing and treating water for steam production and cooling.

Perform preventive maintenance and minor repairs on the 1,250-ton centrifugal chillers.

Maintain and repair all equipment within the A/C plant (two 800-ton chillers, cooling tower, graphic control panel, air compressor, chilled water pumps).

Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Physical effort: able to climb stairs/ladders, lift heavy objects, crawl and stoop in close spaces.

Experience with heavy valve operation, cleaning, lubrication, and maintenance.

Ability to work in confined spaces, inadequate lighting, and ventilation, and under heat, noise, cold, toxic gases, steam, steam blowback, scalding water, and electrical shock hazards.

Must wear ear protection (mandatory) and participate in the Hearing Conservation Program.

Must wear protective respirator to protect against toxic fumes (as required by OSHA). Beard restriction and baseline pulmonary function test required.

Knowledge, skills, and abilities evaluated against job elements: equipment assembly/installation/repair, instruction interpretation, blueprint reading, material technical practices, troubleshooting, use and maintenance of tools and equipment.

Minimum of 35–40 hours per week experience documented with start/end dates on resume. Volunteer experience counted if relevant.

Work Schedule Monday – Friday, 7:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.
