Job Description Dr. Ayako Makino’s laboratory is seeking a Laboratory Technician I to join our translational research team, specializing in cardiovascular pathophysiology and vascular cell biology. Our research focuses on the pathogenic mechanisms of coronary vascular complications in diabetes and menopause, as well as the pathobiology of pulmonary hypertension.
Responsibilities
Maintain mouse colonies through weekly checks, cleaning cages, weaning litter, mating, tailing, and genotyping.
Perform basic molecular biology experiments, including PCR genotyping.
Conduct animal experiments, including chemical administration and assessment of cardiac and vascular functions via echocardiography and/or Millar catheterization.
Coordinate with investigators to maintain lab equipment and reagents, and manage lab records and protocols.
Acquire and analyze data, troubleshoot technical issues, and contribute to high‑quality scientific outcomes.
Required Qualifications Associate’s degree in an appropriate area or a high school diploma or equivalent with two years of related experience. Appropriate college coursework or vocational/technical training may substitute at an equivalent rate for the required experience.
Preferred Qualifications
Applicant is over the age of 18 as required by UF animal handling policy.
Experience in mouse colony maintenance, animal experiments, and cardiac/vascular function assessment.
Proficiency in record‑keeping, PCR/qPCR/western blot, aseptic cell culture techniques.
Data analysis and troubleshooting skills.
Effective time‑management, teamwork, and coordination abilities.
Knowledge of GraphPad, EndNote, and MS Office.
Enthusiasm for learning and genuine interest in scientific research.
Ideal Work Schedule Monday – Wednesday, 20 hours per week (no hybrid schedule). This is a time‑limited position.
