The State of Connecticut Department of Transportation (DOT) invites qualified applicants to apply for the Transportation Maintainer 2 position in the Materials Management Unit, Central Warehouse located in Rocky Hill.

Position Details

Full‑time, 40 hours/week

Monday–Friday, 7:30 A.M.–4:00 P.M.

Must accept emergency duties, including snow and ice removal; mandatory winter overtime occurs November 1 – April 30 each year.

Position Requirements Applicants invited to interview must provide:

A current valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class A or B with “tank endorsement”

A current valid Medical Examiner’s Card (MEC)

A copy of their Master Application

A thoroughly completed Connecticut Department of Transportation Commercial Driver Supplement (CTDOT‑CDL‑1)

Your Role Incumbents will be responsible for performing a full range of materials management duties, both manual and clerical. Key responsibilities include:

Utilize CoreCT – Inventory Management Module to maintain inventory control of parts and supplies.

Receive vendor deliveries; verify against purchase orders, unpack shipments, check condition, quantity, part numbers, and catalog numbers, then put‑away stock appropriately.

Perform cycle counts to ensure inventory accuracy.

Operate forklift, reach truck, and other warehouse equipment.

Travel to other stockrooms and vendor locations for parts and supplies.

Provide backup coverage in satellite stockroom operations as needed.

Perform housekeeping and landscaping/groundskeeping duties, including mowing, weeding, plowing, shoveling, and raking, as well as using hand and power tools.

Assist with office duties such as answering telephones, taking messages, using the copier, and performing data entry.

Perform related duties as required.

Selection Plan To be considered, applicants must be a current State of CT employee of the agency listed above for at least six (6) months full‑time service, except where collective bargaining language applies, and must meet the minimum qualifications. Specify all qualifications on the application.

Minimum Qualifications

One (1) year of experience in construction, landscaping, commercial driving, snow plowing, or maintenance and repair of roadsides, roadways, bridges, or airports involving mechanical equipment.

Graduation from a vocational or technical school with a diploma in a maintenance trade may be substituted for the general experience.

Successful completion of the Transportation Maintenance Registered Apprenticeship Program approved by the Department of Administrative Services may be substituted for the general experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with Core‑CT or other computerized purchasing and inventory management systems.

Knowledge of warehouse and inventory control best practices.

Experience operating forklift, reach truck, bobcat, floor scrubber, and payloader.

Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, Word).

Good oral and written communication skills and strong customer service orientation.

Special Requirements

Incumbents may be required to possess and retain current licenses, permits, and/or certifications as directed.

Incumbents must be willing to accept assignment to emergency duties, including snow and ice removal, whenever required.

Physical & Working Conditions Incumbents must possess adequate physical strength and stamina, maintain visual and auditory acuity, and perform heavy lifting and work in extreme weather conditions. The role may involve exposure to hazardous machinery, heights on bridges, poison ivy, insect bites, and loud machinery. A physical examination will be required.

Incumbents may be required to complete an asbestos removal program and use protective equipment such as respirators and safety goggles if applicable.
