Summary
This position is located in the Planned Projects Section of Maintenance and Operations - Facility Management Service - at the VA Medical Center - Salem - Virginia. Responsible for installing, troubleshooting, and repairing all electrical equipment, such as: electrical distribution system, including primary system cable, switches, transformers, electrical systems up to 4-100 volts, main distribution panels, feeders, power conditioners, branch panels, circuits, and devices up to 600 volts. To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement. EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality to perform the work of this position. Evidence demonstrating knowledge, skills, and ability must be supported by detailed descriptions on your resume. Applicants will be rated according to the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards. SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will be evaluated against the screen-out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the online questionnaire. Those with at least the minimal acceptable qualification are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible. The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the Job Elements: Electric Drawings; Electrical Equipment; Technical Practices (Electrical/Electronic); Troubleshooting (Electrical); Use and Maintain Hand Tools (Electrical Work). Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work. Volunteer work helps build competencies and can provide valuable training and experience that translates to paid employment. A full year of work is 35-40 hours per week. Part-time experience is credited based on hours worked. Installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of electrical wiring systems and associated fixtures, controls, and equipment in industrial, institutional, office, and residential buildings Knowledge and application of electrical principles, materials, and safety standards Work with little or no supervision in installing, maintaining, troubleshooting and repairing electrical wiring systems and associated fixtures, controls, and equipment Work from building plans, blueprints, wiring diagrams, engineering drawings, and electrical maintenance manuals Perform preventative maintenance and repairs to existing electrical systems, fixtures, controls, and equipment Disassemble equipment, repair/replace parts, clean and reassemble Make operational tests and adjustments as necessary Install equipment Install metal conduit and properly-sized wires Troubleshoot by tracing circuits, locate and diagnose trouble, repair or replace parts and re-install Repair and install line starters, controllers, limit switches, pressure switches, and relays Use electrical formulas for computing voltages, resistance, amperages, capacitances, and frequencies Work schedule: Monday - Friday, 3:00-11:30pm Must have the flexibility to work outside the normal tour of duty, including weekends and holidays Job details
