Shelter Surgery Veterinary Technician
to join our high-volume spay and neuter department at the Papago Park Campus. Working Monday through Friday, our shelter surgery team plays a critical role in ensuring every animal receives compassionate, high-quality medical care.
Job Overview The Veterinary Technician II - Shelter Surgery will assist veterinarians in all aspects of our spay/neuter initiatives, including surgery, laboratory diagnostics, fluid therapy, emergency care as necessary, and the administration of prescribed medications. The technician will assist in surgery prep, induction, monitoring, and recovering, and will collaborate with veterinarians and other departments to ensure optimal animal care and flow.
Responsibilities
Assist veterinarians in spay/neuter procedures and perioperative care.
Assist in surgery prep, induction, monitoring, and recovery.
Perform laboratory diagnostics and administer medications as prescribed.
Provide safe and humane animal handling; work in a fast-paced environment.
Coordinate with other departments to ensure optimal animal care and flow.
Qualifications
High school diploma or GED required.
At least 2 years of experience in a veterinary clinic/hospital setting required.
Completion of a veterinary technician program preferred; experience may substitute for education.
Knowledge of phlebotomy, immunology, parasitology, endocrinology and pharmacology.
Safe and humane animal handling skills are required.
Must be proficient in anesthesiology.
Provide excellent patient care in perioperative phases for up to 50 cats and/or dogs per day.
Must be able to function in a fast-paced environment.
Physical Demands and Work Environment The employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls, reach with hands and arms, climb stairs, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. May lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Must be able to hear above the sound of the animals. There will be exposure to dust, heat, cold and temperature changes; wet floors, and animal noises, odors and dander. Most time will be spent in a typical air conditioned and heated office environment. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
