Position Summary The Skilled Laborer / Pipe Layer supports civil site development operations with a focus on the installation of underground utilities, including storm drain, water, and sanitary sewer systems. This role requires hands-on field experience, precision in laying pipe to grade, and the ability to assist with general site development tasks. The ideal candidate will work closely with foremen, equipment operators, and other crew members to ensure efficient and safe trenching and utility installation operations across residential development projects.
Responsibilities
Proven ability to install and align underground utility pipe (storm, sewer, water) to grade and specifications
Skilled in reading and interpreting grade stakes, pipe laser settings, and cut sheets
Ability to perform pipe bedding, backfilling, and compaction to meet quality standards
Proficient with hand tools and small equipment used in pipe laying and trench work
Familiarity with trench safety practices, including shoring and sloping requirements
Physical stamina to perform tasks in varying weather conditions and site terrain
Strong communication and teamwork skills; able to follow direction precisely
Basic math and measurement skills for pipe alignment and grade checking
Proficient in the use of hand and power tools such as shovels, compactors, saws, etc
Ability to perform physical labor in various outdoor conditions
Familiarity with trench safety, pipe laying, grading, and general civil site work
Ability to read and understand construction plans and stakeout marks
Basic understanding of job site safety practices and OSHA requirements
Preferred Skills
Experience with pressure testing, manhole installation, and utility tie-ins
Ability to operate trench shoring systems and pipe lasers
Knowledge of local utility installation codes and practices
CDL or ability to operate equipment such as mini-excavators or trenchers
OSHA 10-hour or 30-hour certification
Experience working on residential or commercial site development projects
Knowledge of utility installation (storm, sewer, water)
Familiarity with GPS or laser leveling equipment
Qualifications
High school diploma or GED required
2-4 years of experience in underground utility installation or civil site development
Demonstrated proficiency in pipe laying on residential or commercial development projects
Familiarity with both new construction and utility rehabilitation environments
Prior experience working with grading, trenching, or underground utilities
OSHA 10-hour certification preferred
Confined Space and Trench Safety training a plus
First Aid/CPR certification a plus
Ability to provide effective verbal and written communication
Meet deadlines with minimal supervision
Must possess a valid drivers license and maintain a clean driving record
Ability to travel to various job sites as required
Days and hours of work vary based on job size and job location; typically 40-55 hours weekly with evening and weekend work as required
Familiar with working in Florida Panhandle region
Must successfully pass pre-employment post offer drug screen
Physical Requirements
Constant physical effort, including standing, for at least eight hours per day; must be able to walk, bend, kneel, stoop, crouch, crawl and climb as required
Frequently work with hands extended overhead, sometimes with hand power tools
Able to lift and carry at least 50 pounds regularly and up to 90 pounds
Manual dexterity to hand-carry generators, lumber, and other construction materials, forms, and tools
Ability to climb on and off heavy mobile equipment safely
Frequently walk on uneven surfaces, including natural terrain
Able to work in high, precarious places and in extreme heat or cold
Work environment may include moderate to loud noise, grease, and dust typical of a construction site
