Commercial Assistant / Assistant Quantity Surveyor
We are seeking a diligent and enthusiastic Commercial Assistant / Assistant Quantity Surveyor to support our commercial function on a range of rail infrastructure projects. Working under the guidance of our Commercial Manager, you will contribute to the financial and contractual control of projects in accordance with Network Rail standards, ensuring the commercial success of work packages throughout their lifecycle.
Key Responsibilities
Assist in the preparation and submission of valuations, final accounts, and project cost reports in line with contract requirements (e.g., NEC3/NEC4, Network Rail frameworks).
Support procurement and tendering activities including quantity take-offs, subcontractor enquiries, and bid evaluations.
Maintain commercial records and assist in tracking project costs, budgets, and value engineering opportunities.
Process and validate subcontractor applications, variations, and final accounts.
Assist in managing change control processes, including identification and valuation of compensation events.
Attend project and commercial meetings; record actions and maintain commercial trackers.
Support the production of monthly Cost Value Reconciliations (CVRs) and forecasting reports.
Liaise with project teams to ensure accurate reporting and commercial compliance.
Assist in the submission of applications for payment to clients (e.g., Network Rail) and ensure timely certification.
Key Skills And Qualifications
Working towards or recently completed a qualification in Quantity Surveying or Commercial Management (HNC, HND, BSc or equivalent).
Understanding of standard railway contract forms such as NEC and familiarity with Network Rail processes.
Competent in MS Excel; knowledge of commercial software (e.g., Cemar, COINS, Candy) is advantageous.
Good written and verbal communication skills; ability to liaise across departments.
Organised, with attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple priorities.
An interest in developing a long-term career in the rail or infrastructure sector.
Desirable
Previous experience on rail projects (e.g., renewals, station upgrades, signalling, track or civils).
Understanding of GRIP/PACE project lifecycle stages.
Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel to project sites.
