Overview

Under direction, is responsible for lead work in inspecting the safe and economical construction of public works projects to ensure compliance with plans and specifications. Inspection work is performed on large size projects such as major streets, bridges, drainage facilities, sewage treatment plants, lift stations, and related bond projects. Working conditions are inside and outside with occasional exposure to temperature variations, damp/wet surfaces, hazardous materials, flammable liquids, high noise areas, dust, and unfavorable fumes and vapors. Work Location: Northeast Service Center - 10303 Toolyard, Building 2, San Antonio, TX 78233 Work Hours: 7:45 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., Monday - Friday Responsibilities

Prepares working day statements to calculate monthly estimates for payment to contractors. Meets regularly with consulting engineer to discuss project status and any project related problems. Meets with residents and community groups to discuss construction related problems. Trains Construction Inspectors on writing letter of acceptance for completed projects. Utilizes surveying or construction engineering equipment, occasionally lifting and carrying equipment weighing up to 50 pounds, to inspect sanitary sewer construction, storm sewer construction, and street construction. Collects samples of materials used in projects to send to the testing laboratory. Coordinates construction or repair activities between contractors and utility companies to avoid conflicts and to ensure a minimum disruption of services. Ensures that contractor conforms with safety rules and regulations, to include proper shoring trenches in accordance with OSHA rules and regulations. Conducts inspections for curb, sidewalk, and approaches. Assembles and records precise comprehensive documentary information substantiating the quality and quantity of work performed. Performs related duties and fulfills responsibilities as required. Qualifications

High school diploma or GED equivalent (recognized by the Texas Education Agency or a regional accrediting agency). Five (5) years of experience in public works projects or inspections. Valid Class \'C\' Texas Driver\'s License. Preferred Qualifications

Bachelors in Construction Management. Three (3) years of experience in/or in conjunction of a combination of: Construction Management, Materials testing, and/or Public Works construction maintenance/operations. Advanced technical skills utilizing mobile devices Ability to enhance team by assisting other team members and influence a positive atmosphere. Ability to conduct training sessions to peers Ability to utilize MS Teams to enhance and share information to others in their teams. Applicant Information

Unless otherwise stated, applicants are permitted to substitute two years of related full-time experience for one year of higher education or one year of related higher education for two years of experience in order to meet the minimum requirements of the job. One year of full-time experience is defined as 30 or more hours worked per week for 12 months. One year of higher education is defined as 30 credit hours completed at an accredited college or university. Knowledge of all phases of streets, bridges, sewer, sewage treatment plants, and drainage systems construction, to include methods, equipment, costs, and materials. Knowledge of grades, mathematics, construction layouts, and plan interpretation. Knowledge of principles and practices of construction and engineering. Knowledge of codes, regulations, and ordinances related to the construction industry. Knowledge of hazards, safety, and other OSHA regulations related to the construction industry. Knowledge of engineering mathematics. Skill in utilizing tools and equipment used in the construction, engineering, and surveying trade, to include Instrument/Level, Laser, Slum Cone, Scale, and Nuclear Density Machine. Ability to interpret plans, blueprints, specifications. Ability to communicate clearly and effectively. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with City staff and the general public. Ability to perform engineering calculations. Ability to use independent judgment in making decisions. Ability to exercise firmness and tact in dealing with contractors, engineers etc. Ability to interpret and properly apply all applicable codes and regulations.
