Community Outreach Worker (Health, Behavior & Society) The Department of Health, Behavior & Society is seeking a Community Outreach Worker (COW) to provide entry‑level administrative support for a research project. The role will assist with community outreach, data collection, sample collection, laboratory work, and field work to support the Check It mobile overdose‑ and HIV‑prevention intervention in Baltimore and neighboring counties.

Responsibilities

Assist with collection and organization of data per study requirements (e.g., participant interviews, questionnaires, background research).

Assist with setup of tools and procedures for data collection and study processes.

Enter data into the database and run routine queries.

Perform basic literature searches.

Collect, organize, and distribute services: HIV testing and counseling, safer drug use supplies, naloxone, and training.

Build rapport with community members, including people who use drugs, through outreach and attendance at community association meetings.

Engage in harm‑reduction street outreach, promote program services, distribute promotional items, and provide harm‑reduction education.

Develop referral networks, maintain relationships with service providers and pharmacies, and make warm‑hand‑off referrals to medical, social, treatment, and other support services.

Document client interactions and service/supply provision; organize and track supply inventory.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Additional Responsibilities

Provide specialized support, referrals, and harm‑reduction services to clients who visit the study’s mobile van.

Maintain a referral network and collect data related to service delivery and distribution of supplies.

Distribute safer drug use supplies, including syringes and other harm‑reduction tools.

Train clients and community members on naloxone use.

Minimum Qualifications

High School Diploma or equivalent; some college coursework preferred.

Experience and education substitution per JHU equivalency formula are allowed.

Preferred Qualifications

Prior experience in a syringe services or other harm‑reduction program.

Experience conducting outreach with people who use drugs and other marginalized populations.

Familiarity with harm‑reduction principles.

Experience working in field or mobile care settings.

Compensation & Benefits Salary: $15.40–$23.25 per hour (commensurate with experience). Total rewards include healthcare, life, career, and retirement benefits. Additional information is available on the JHU HR website.
