Laboratory Animal Resources/Research Resources – Rodent Animal Care Technician

Work Hours: 6:00 AM to 2:30 PM from Monday through Friday, including supervisor scheduled weekends, holidays, weather emergencies, and university closings.
Summary:
The Laboratory Animal Resource (LAR) group at Princeton University is a centralized administrative department reporting to the Dean for Research. It is responsible for the animal and veterinary care of all research animals at Princeton University. The Animal Technician for the Life Sciences Complex provides state-of-the-art animal care for laboratory animals housed within these facilities. He/she receives direction from the LAR Facility Manager. The primary responsibility is to care for various laboratory species, primarily rodents, but also including aquatic and USDA-covered species. The Animal Technician ensures the cleanliness of the facility, maintains adequate supplies of food, bedding materials, and PPE. The technician works with other team members according to a schedule prepared by the LAR Manager and must be willing to rotate through all LAR facilities. The role involves improving animal husbandry methods, ensuring high-quality care, and supporting research activities. Good communication skills with co-workers, management, PIs, research staff, students, maintenance crews, and support services are essential. The position reports directly to the Facility Manager.
Animal Husbandry:
Animal Technicians are considered essential services staff, performing jobs necessary to maintain basic university operations during closures due to emergencies or other situations.
Provide animal care for all species according to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), including feeding, watering, cage changing, sanitizing supplies, maintaining clean animal and support areas, and record-keeping.
Complete work promptly and according to SOPs and instructions.
Monitor animal health and welfare daily; report sick or dead animals to the researcher and Veterinary Services. Provide treatments as prescribed.
Monitor, document, and report deviations in environmental parameters such as temperature, humidity, lighting, and air quality.
Implement environmental enrichment specific to species under veterinary guidance and research needs.
Conduct AM and PM health observations.
Operate cage washing machinery, ventilated caging, watering systems, bedding dispensers, autoclaves, and other equipment following safety procedures.
Assist with transgenic rodent colony management, including tissue sampling, setting up breeding pairs, weaning, and data tracking in software applications.
Identify and report facility maintenance issues to the Lead Animal Technician and Facility Manager.
