A Brief Overview The Echocardiographer I is responsible for performing echocardiogram and exercise echocardiogram examinations, including color flow mapping, cardiac Doppler imaging, and 2‑D m‑mode, without the assistance of a cardiologist, on assigned patients. The individual models appropriate behavior as exemplified in MLH Mission, Vision and Values.
What You Will Do
Perform routine, emergency, Doppler, and special (including Contrast Echos and TEE Echos) procedures on patients without the assistance of a cardiologist or other physician. Prepare position of patients before examination, taking into account acoustic window, lung interference, patient’s size, rib interspace distance, and the possibility of congenitally abnormal anatomy. Explain procedure to patient and answer patient’s questions.
Identify and define cardiac abnormalities, and appropriately extend the scope of the exam to define abnormal findings.
Attend and participate in departmental/hospital committees or group meetings as appointed. Participate in quality monitoring and evaluation activities.
Demonstrate effective customer relations skills, promote a positive work environment, and contribute to the overall team effort.
In emergency situations, initiate code procedures, administer first aid or CPR as indicated.
Clean equipment; perform minor repairs; report the need for any major repairs.
Adhere to hospital policies for time, attendance, dress code.
Must be available for on‑call if required and respond within the designated time frame for emergency procedures.
Perform other job functions as assigned or requested.
Education & Qualifications
Technical Degree or Diploma in Diagnostic Cardiac Sonography (or Diagnostic Medical Sonography).
No prior work experience required.
Skills and Abilities
Demonstrates competency in performing Echo examination in the designated area.
Ability to perform competently and efficiently in crisis situations.
Ability to understand and prepare moderately complex written materials, such as patient records.
Ability to communicate verbally with Associates, physicians and other outside professionals.
Ability to work without close supervision and to exercise independent judgment.
Ability to organize multiple tasks and projects and maintain control of workflow.
Ability to float throughout MLH sites and/or clinics to perform procedures if needed.

HEART SAVER – American Heart Association
Registered Cardiac Sonographer – Cardiovascular Credentialing International
Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer – Adult Echocardiography – American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography
Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer – Pediatric Echocardiography – American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography
Physical Demands
Climbing, pushing, standing, walking, reaching, grasping, kneeling, stooping, and repetitive motion.
Must have good balance and coordination.
Exert up to 50 lbs occasionally and up to 25 lbs frequently.
Close visual acuity including color, depth perception, and field of vision.
Frequent invasive and non‑invasive patient contact.
Exposure to patient body fluids and hazardous materials.
Ability to react quickly to emergency situations.
