Base pay range
$72,840.00/yr – $94,699.00/yr
Summary The Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist (DRT) at the GS‑8 level serves in an advanced developmental capacity at the full performance level. The DRT performs a substantially full range of duties in general radiology. The DRT receives guidance and directions regarding unfamiliar or unusual situations for more complex patient issues. Work is primarily performed in the general radiology Section of the Imaging Department.
Qualifications
United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
All applicants must be certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology – Radiography (ARRT) (R).
Advanced ARRT certification is required for assignments that include CT, MRI, and/or mammography duties performed independently.
Advanced certification indicates that the incumbent can operate independently and has demonstrated specific clinical competency in the appropriate specialty and passed the designated examination.
For modalities that require advanced certification, technologists may be provided on-the-job training with oversight from a certified radiologic technologist.
Completion of a full‑time training course of at least 24 months in a post‑high‑school diagnostic radiologic technology program, evidenced by a certificate or an associate degree accredited by JRCERT or an agency recognized by DOE.
Meet credentialing standards under 42 CFR Part 75 and the Consumer‑Patient Radiation Health and Safety Act of 1981.
Grandfathering provision: individuals who were employed in this occupation before the effective date of the qualification standard are considered to have met all requirements.
English language proficiency in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d) – 7407(d).
At least one year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level that demonstrates the clinical competencies described at that level.
Duties include providing independent services in specialized areas of radiologic technology and/or general radiologic technology services with minimal oversight for complex issues.
Duties
Perform radiographic duties in the general section of the Imaging Department.
Apply specific knowledge and training in the location, appearance, and function of radiologic systems.
Interpret examination requests accurately and use appropriate techniques to identify organs and tissues on the digital display monitor.
Perform most procedures, including complex patient examinations under the direction of a radiologist or senior staff member.
Assist in procedures in other specialty modalities as needed.
Operate CR readers, CD-ROMs, and PACS systems.
Schedule exams to ensure maximum utilization of equipment and accommodate emergency exams.
Practice radiation safety, maintain records, identify patient images correctly, and monitor patient condition during procedures.
Provide proctoring for DRT students from the UPSTATE school of allied health professionals at the full performance level.
Other related duties as assigned.
Work schedule: 4:00 pm to 12:00 am (midnight) with rotating weekends and holidays or 8:30 am to 5:00 pm with rotating weekends and holidays.
