The position involves managing cancer patient databases and recording information that aids in early cancer detection, treatment improvement, and survival rate enhancement. The role requires examining medical and pathology records to determine patient eligibility for the cancer registry and translating medical terminology into standardized codes for accurate diagnosis and treatment documentation.
Accountabilities
Digest complex clinical information to determine if data entered into the Cancer Registry software is accurate, complete, and valid.
Review data for completeness and accuracy, pursuing missing data necessary for abstract completion by contacting outside physician offices, hospitals, and Cancer Registries.
Manage and maintain lifetime follow‑up data on all analytic patients in the Cancer Registry.
Maintain patient confidentiality and security of patient data in all formats maintained in the Cancer Registry.
Attend and participate in departmental, organizational and/or educational meetings as requested. Remote employees are expected to travel onsite for meetings/events as needed.
Cooperate with the State Department of Health in supplying requested data.
Prepare oncology‑related reports for staff, physicians, and outside organizations as requested.
Participate in quality improvement initiatives and assist with department quality assurance and improvement plan as directed by the Manager.
Complete concurrent QA processes to ensure ongoing productivity, quality, and professional development goals are met.
Maintain knowledge of current trends and developments in the field by reading relevant literature and participating in seminars and conferences to stay up to date.
Complete annual education requirements outlined by the National Association of Cancer Registrars (NCRA) to maintain active and good‑standing Oncology Data Specialist (ODS) credentials.
Qualifications
Associate's degree and 2+ years’ experience in the Cancer Registry with a minimum of 1 year of abstraction experience as Oncology Data Specialist in a hospital setting.
Licenses and Registrations / Certifications
Oncology Data Specialist (ODS) - REQUIRED
Schedule Monday – Friday (no weekends), part‑time, 28 hours per week.
