General Transportation Tech I/II/III - Dimmitt, TX
Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is hiring General Transportation Technicians (I, II, and III) in the Dimmitt Maintenance Office. The role involves routine transportation operations, maintenance support, equipment operation, traffic control, and emergency response. The position requires driving a state vehicle and, for higher grades, a Class “A” Commercial Driver’s License with an “N” endorsement.
Essential Duties General Transportation Tech I
Assist in identifying, repairing, and installing signs, delineators, mailbox supports, and posts; perform basic welding as needed.
Support local law enforcement at accident sites and assist stranded motorists.
Assist with traffic control, placing and gathering cones, warning signs, and barricades; flag traffic.
Inspect barricades for compliance with barricade standards.
Maintain highways and rights‑of‑way; perform roadway repairs, erect and repair guard rails, highway markers, and signs; haul materials and equipment to job sites.
Maintain picnic and rest areas, rights‑of‑way, maintenance yards, and comfort stations.
Remove litter and roadway debris.
Mow rights‑of‑way and rest areas; perform plant and landscape maintenance.
Operate light equipment (front‑end loader, roller, broom, spreader, backhoe, street sweeper, mower).
Perform preventive maintenance inspections (PMI), routine servicing, and minor repairs on equipment; complete required reports.
Provide assistance during emergency situations such as floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, snowstorms, accidents, and hazardous material spills.
Inspect maintenance contract construction methods and workmanship to ensure compliance with plans and specifications.
Perform other assigned job responsibilities.
General Transportation Tech II
Serve as the sole maintenance contract inspector on a small project.
Inspect traffic control devices and placement at construction sites for compliance with specifications and safety laws.
Maintain construction project records, including bridge inspection records; process related paperwork.
Perform skilled roadway repairs; erect and repair guard rails, highway markers, and signs; haul materials and equipment to job sites.
Operate heavy equipment such as front‑end loader, tractor‑trailer haul truck, large dragline, shovel, paint striper, and dump truck.
Identify, repair, and install signs; weld; move equipment/tools and materials.
Inspect routine maintenance contract construction methods and workmanship to ensure compliance with plans and specifications.
Identify, analyze, and implement solutions for complex maintenance problems.
Inspect materials, equipment, and production procedures in a manufacturing plant or at point of supply to ensure compliance with Department specifications.
Work on a survey crew; operate survey instruments (theodolite, transit, level, EDM, total station).
Perform other assigned job responsibilities.
General Transportation Tech III
Perform highly skilled roadway repairs; erect and repair guard rails, highway markers, and signs; haul materials and equipment to job sites.
Inspect routine and non‑routine maintenance contract construction methods and workmanship to ensure compliance with plans and specifications.
Operate complex heavy equipment (motor grader, large excavator, heavy bulldozer, crane, herbicide truck, heavy asphalt paving machine, self‑propelled asphalt distributor, profiling/milling machine).
Serve as a work crew project lead to ensure project specifications are met.
Train other employees.
Perform other assigned job responsibilities.
Minimum Qualifications
No specific education required.
Experience: GTT I – no experience required; GTT II – 1 year; GTT III – 2 years in transportation engineering support, roadway maintenance, construction inspection, or heavy equipment operation.
Technical training or accredited education may substitute for experience on a 1:1 basis.
Licenses and Certifications
Valid driver’s license (required to operate state vehicle).
Class “A” Commercial Driver’s License with “N” endorsement or equivalent within 120 days of employment (required for GTT II/III).
Preferred Qualifications
Commercial Driver’s License.
Competencies
Knowledge of transportation engineering construction and maintenance methods, materials, and equipment.
Familiarity with the Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
Understanding of industry safety standards and guidelines.
Computer proficiency (MS Office, GIS, etc.).
Manual and power tool skill; heavy equipment operation.
Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and work safely.
Physical Requirements
Wear protective gear (hard hat, safety boots, respirator).
Experience extreme cold and heat; noise and vibration exposure.
Lift up to 50 lbs; frequent lifting and carrying up to 25 lbs.
Climb ladders, stairs, scaffolds; balance on uneven surfaces.
Push/pull equipment; bend, kneel, and reach effectively.
Normal hearing and vision required; ability to operate motor vehicles.
Conditions of Employment
Pre‑employment physical exam required.
Drug test prior to employment; position classified as Safety Impact; mandatory random drug testing.
Must report within 45 minutes on a 24‑hour basis for emergencies.
