Polysomnography Technologist - Pediatric Sleep Lab
Location: Duke University Hospital - Pediatrics Sleep Lab
Shifts: Three (3) 12-hour shifts. Any combination of shifts. Weekend options available.

This role provides clinical assessment, physiological monitoring, and testing to assist with diagnosis, management, and prevention of sleep-related disorders using polysomnography, scoring of clinical events, and reporting. It involves working with patients of all ages and using devices such as PAP/BPAP, oximetry, capnography, actigraphy, and related screening tools.
General Summary The Sleep Technologist will provide clinical assessment, physiological monitoring, and testing to assist with diagnosis, management, and prevention of sleep-related disorders. Tools include polysomnography, scoring of clinical events, generation of accurate reports, and use of positive airway pressure devices and related monitoring equipment. Age-specific care will be provided for adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients as appropriate.
Responsibilities Level 1
Verify the medical order and protocol.
Explain the procedure and orient the patient to the sleep center.
Prepare and calibrate equipment required for testing to determine proper functioning.
Perform routine PAP mask fitting.
Apply electrodes and sensors according to accepted published standards.
Assist with following "lights out" procedures to establish baseline values (e.g., body position, oximetry, respiratory and heart rates).
Assist and observe polysomnography data acquisition.
Document routine observations, including sleep stages and clinical events, to facilitate scoring and interpretation.
Assist with appropriate interventions for patient safety and therapeutic intervention (e.g., BPAP, O2).
Assist with "lights on" procedures to verify data integrity and complete data collection.
Perform routine polysomnography data acquisition while monitoring study-tracing quality to ensure signals are artifact-free.
Identify and report signal abnormalities.
Demonstrate knowledge to provide age-specific care in treatment, assessment and education of adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients.
Level 2
Perform all Level 1 duties.
Review patient history, medications, and study protocol.
Prepare and calibrate equipment and adjust as necessary.
Perform "lights out" procedures to establish baseline values.
Independently perform routine and CPAP/split polysomnography data acquisition with artifact-free signals; make adjustments as needed.
Implement appropriate interventions (e.g., BPAP, O2) for patient safety.
Perform "lights on" procedures to verify data integrity and complete data collection.
Level 3
Perform all Level 1 and Level 2 duties.
Collect, analyze, and integrate patient information to determine final testing parameters in collaboration with the ordering physician or clinical director.
Explain pre-testing, testing, and post-testing procedures to the patient.
Perform routine and complex PAP mask fitting.
Conduct routine and complex PAP/split/BPAP/ASV polysomnography data acquisition with artifact-free signals and adjustments as needed.
Follow protocols for additional tests (MSLT, MWT, parasomnia studies, PAP, oxygen titration, etc.).
Oversee and perform difficult procedures and therapeutic interventions.
Maintain and troubleshoot equipment; communicate issues to colleagues or vendor/supervisor as needed.
Demonstrate ability to analyze complex situations and develop clinical standards and protocols.
Generate requisitions and check in patients as needed; assign nightly workload to coworkers; process daily charges.
Required Qualifications Education
Level 1: High school diploma or GED, or 1 year of post-secondary education, or current enrollment in a health-related polysomnography program (associate degree emphasis).
Level 2: Associate degree in a health-related field preferred, or completion of a polysomnography program (1 year), with state license and/or nationally accredited credential.
Level 3: Associate degree in a health-related field preferred in polysomnography, or similar program (1 year) with state license and/or nationally accredited credential.
Experience
Level 1: With an associate degree in a health-related field, no experience required; otherwise 6 months of direct patient care experience.
Level 2: 18 months of polysomnography experience preferred or documented proficiency in all required competencies; if no associate degree, an additional two years of direct patient care.
Level 3: 4 years of experience in polysomnography technology required.
Licensure and Certification
Level 1: RPSGT or Respiratory Care Practitioner (CRT or RRT) license; NC licensure/registration; BLS certification.
Level 2: RPSGT or Respiratory Therapist with SDS certificate; NC licensure/registration; BLS certification.
Level 3: RPSGT or Respiratory Therapist with SDS certificate; NC licensure/registration; BLS certification.
Distinguishing Characteristics of Levels
Level 1: Develop competency in basic polysomnography under supervision; CEUs and AASM A-Step enrollment required.
Level 2: Perform comprehensive polysomnography testing and analysis; supervision may be provided; CEUs required.
Level 3: Provide comprehensive evaluation and treatment of sleep disorders; may supervise others; higher CEU requirements.
