Respiratory Therapist (RRT) – Southside Medical Center – PRN

Respiratory Care Practitioner (RRT) Southside Medical Center, Petersburg, VA PRN as needed, Evenings/Nights (12‑hour shifts from 7 PM to 7 AM; minimum 36 hours every six weeks) Job Summary The Respiratory Care Practitioner is responsible for providing comprehensive respiratory care through patient assessment, planning, intervention, education, and evaluation. Duties include oxygen and aerosolized medication delivery, ventilator care, bronchial hygiene therapy, diagnostic services, and patient and staff education. The practitioner monitors patient responses to therapies and makes recommendations for adjustments based on assessment.
Essential Functions
May serve as a preceptor to new team members and/or students.
Assesses patient’s physical status through inspection, palpation, auscultation, percussion, patient behavior, and review of existing data.
Performs treatments per physician orders, explains therapy, and modifies procedures based on patient response.
Determines appropriateness of prescribed therapy and recommends methods to physicians (e.g., IPPB, aerosol therapy, postural drainage, ultrasonic nebulizer, incentive spirometry, MDIs, spacers).
Sets up and maintains oxygen therapy modes to achieve adequate PaO₂ with accurate inspired oxygen levels.
Administers IPPB or aerosol therapy, documents vital signs and therapy impacts, and identifies adverse reactions.
Performs postural drainage, vibration, and percussion, checks orders and X‑rays, and evaluates secretion clearance.
Instructs patients and families on incentive spirometer, MDI use, postural drainage, oxygen therapy, ventilator care, and home aerosol therapy.
May assist with bronchoscopy and tracheostomy changes and ensure proper humidification.
Procures sputum for culture and sensitivity; performs airway clearance techniques and suctioning.
Evaluates normal and pathologic lab values, performs arterial punctures, interprets ABG results, and performs arterial line procedures.
May perform EKGs and understand basic arrhythmias.
Maintains all respiratory therapy equipment and supplies.
Responds to cardiopulmonary resuscitations and participates as required.
Education
Bachelor’s Degree related to Respiratory Therapy, Health Care, Healthcare Administration, or Business Administration (preferred).
Required Licensing & Certifications
Current Respiratory Care License in the state of employment (required).
National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) credential (required).
Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) (preferred).
BLS Basic Life Support – American Heart Association (required).
ACLS Advanced Cardiac Life Support – American Heart Association or Red Cross (preferred).
PALS Pediatric Advanced Life Support – American Heart Association (preferred).
Valid driver’s license (required for Home Care/DME).
Experience
Previous experience in an ambulatory or acute care setting (preferred).
6 months of respiratory therapy experience in a general care area (preferred).
Skills & Abilities
Strong interpersonal skills and ability to effectively interact with patients, families, physicians, and staff.
Effective communication skills, both oral and written.
Ability to work with diverse populations.
Good customer service, organizational, and time‑management skills.
Feedback reception and proactive improvement.
Data gathering and interpretation.
Accountability and professionalism.
Knowledge of non‑invasive respiratory therapy equipment (e.g., oximeters, end‑tidal CO₂ analyzers).
Proficiency in therapeutic procedures including CPAP/BiPAP, jet aerosol, oxygen therapy, incentive spirometry, chest physiotherapy, pulse oximetry, high‑flow oxygen, continuous aerosol, ventilator management, and diagnostic testing.
Understanding of EKGs, electronic monitoring, lead placement, and basic arrhythmias.
Experience with arterial blood gas punctures and testing.
Airway maneuvers and bedside pulmonary function testing.
Patient assessment and education.
Chest suction equipment knowledge and chest X‑ray interpretation.
Training
EPIC Electronic Health Record (EHR) training (preferred).
