Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist (Mammography) Summary: The Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist (DRT) – Mammography is assigned to the VA NORCAL Health Care System in the Diagnostic Imaging Service at the Mather – CA VA. The DRT performs routine to moderately complex radiographic examination procedures to conduct diagnostic studies ensuring accurate diagnosis and treatment. The 2‑page Resume requirement does not apply to this occupational series.

Pay Base pay range: $112,104.00/yr – $145,729.00/yr

Responsibilities

Operate mammography equipment to provide diagnostic images for radiologist interpretation.

Perform routine to moderately complex radiographic examinations using diagnostic X‑ray equipment.

Operate and display X‑ray control consoles, tube assemblies, and lock systems for mammography and general radiology studies.

Apply standardized mammography positions for imaging.

Conduct general radiology imaging studies (chest, abdomen, extremity).

Maintain quality and quantity of mammographic and radiographic exams, minimizing patient dosage and reducing costs.

Practice radiation safety—use lead aprons, gloves, shields, and wear film badges.

Participate in quality assurance activities and safety procedures per medical center policies.

Schedule exams and manage work‑list in the HIS‑RIS interface; enter patient data and image identifiers accurately.

Explain exam procedures and potential adverse reactions to patients.

Monitor vital signs and respond to allergic reactions or emergencies.

Match and submit outside films, track film data, and ensure compliance with the Mammography Quality Standards Act (MQSA).

Maintain cleanliness and adequate supply levels in assigned areas.

Report equipment malfunctions promptly; submit repair orders as required.

Work 4 days a week with rotating days and no weekends.

Basic Qualifications

United States citizenship (non‑citizens only if no qualified citizens are available per VA policy).

Certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology – Radiography (ARRT).

Advanced ARRT certification required for assignments including CT, MRI, or mammography performed independently.

Completion of a full‑time training course of at least 24 months in a post‑high‑school diagnostic radiologic technology program (certificate or associate degree), accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) or equivalent.

Experience creditable at the GS‑10 level requires at least one year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade, directly related to the position.

Advanced diagnostic radiologic technologist assignments require demonstration of significant complexity and advanced KSA in radiation protection, imaging software, and patient positioning.

Preferred experience: 3 years in DRT mammography.

Physical Requirements

Physical examination conducted per VA Directive and Handbook 5019.

Ability to lift, transfer, and manipulate patients and equipment while following ergonomic practices.
