Position Description This position constructs and repairs building frameworks as well as structures. Stairways, doorframes, partitions, rafters, cabinetry, siding, and drywall are a few examples of on-site tasks this position is responsible for completing. Carpenters pay great attention to project detail and have a strong understanding of wood and metal properties. Carpenters are also required at various times to do virtually all the carpenter support activities performed by laborers. This is a safety-sensitive position.
Responsibilities
Construct and repair building frameworks, stairways, doorframes, partitions, rafters, cabinetry, siding, and drywall.
Assist with carpenter support activities as needed by laborers.
Follow safety practices per the Hensel Phelps safety and health program.
Include load, transport, and handling of building materials and tools as required.
Position Qualifications
High School Diploma or GED.
Follow safe work practices in accordance with the safety program.
Ability to take initiative and ask questions.
Keen attention to detail and ability to follow instructions.
Provide own safety footwear.
Effective and professional communication with co-workers and stakeholders.
Strong mathematical reasoning and quantitative skills.
Reliable and punctual with dependable transportation and consistent attendance.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience in construction layout, blueprint reading and shop drawing reading.
Assist with assembly and removal of concrete forms.
Assist with building and installing window-frames, doors, staircases, partitions, millwork, trim, siding, drywall, and overall building frames.
Ensure layout of flooring, roofing, and drywall are leveled and compatible.
Read blueprints, drawings, and sketches to understand project requirements.
Measure and calculate material quantities; cut, shape, and fit wood or other materials as required.
Load, unload, identify and distribute materials, machinery, and tools.
Job shadow in area assignments to build project knowledge.
Assist with area housekeeping and promote a safe work environment; help secure the jobsite daily and store materials properly.
Physical Work Classification & Demands
Heavy work: exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds frequently, and up to 20 pounds constantly.
Frequent walking, standing, kneeling, crouching, reaching, stooping, reading, speaking, pushing, pulling, lifting, typing, and other movements; frequency varies by activity.
Climbing ladders, stairs, scaffolding and ramps; working at heights for extended periods.
Operating computers or tablets and other office machinery as needed.
Reading blueprints, load charts, and field measurements; communicating with team members and stakeholders.
Exposure to high/low temperatures, noisy environments, outdoor elements, dusts and chemicals (cement dust, solvents, curing compounds).
Prolonged use of power tools (jackhammer, pavement breaker, grinders) and manual handling of materials.
Must be able to wear a respirator and pass medical/fit testing as required.
Ability to hear commands and safety alarms from equipment operators.
