Job Summary

Prepares and processes tissue samples for routine histologic techniques to be examined under a microscope by a pathologist. The histologic techniques include fixation, processing, embedding, microtomy, and staining of tissue for the pathologist evaluation and diagnosis.

Responsibilities

Receive, accession, and prepare tissue samples using accepted histological techniques; perform proper labeling, fixation, embedding, microtomy, staining, and coverslipping. Section and stain histological specimens for routine and special studies; prepare various stains and solutions. Prioritize work; follow laboratory turnaround time standards; use time efficiently. Assist pathologists within scope of practice. Monitor supply inventory and assist in ordering and stocking; properly log reagents and supplies; follow inventory procedures. Demonstrate competency operating, troubleshooting, and maintaining equipment. Perform routine maintenance on equipment and instruments per manufacturer specifications; complete maintenance records; contact Biomedical Engineering or manufacturer for assistance or repair as needed. Able to multitask effectively and to work with limited supervision.

Required Education and Experience

Successful completion of an accredited Histotechnician or Histotechnologist program. High School diploma and 60 college/university semester hours with combination of 12 hours biology and chemistry; one year full-time acceptable experience in a histopathology laboratory within last 5 years. Associate degree with combination of 12 hours biology and chemistry; one year full-time acceptable experience in a histopathology laboratory within last 5 years. High School diploma and two or more years of experience in routine histology in lieu of academic credit/degree and/or certification.

Preferred Education and Certifications

Associate degree and successful completion of an accredited Histotechnician program, AND/OR Histotechnician certification, HT, by American Society of Clinical Pathology.

Required Minimum Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Training

Detail-oriented with the ability to multitask and prioritize duties.
