Responsibilities Job Summary The RN’s practice is guided by the ANA Standards for Professional Nursing and the Code of Ethics. The RN applies nursing principles, practices, concepts, and procedures relevant to the patient population. Responsibilities include recording medical histories, assisting with diagnostics, operating medical equipment, administering treatments and medications, and supporting patient follow-up and rehabilitation. The RN develops and contributes to care plans, administers medications safely, manages IV lines, teaches patients and families, and delegates tasks to licensed practical nurses and aides. The RN supports clinical knowledge and skills development, precepts new staff and students, and seeks continuous improvement in patient care and clinical outcomes. Nursing practices are evidence-based within a Shared Governance model. For staff caring for stroke patients, knowledge of stroke symptoms, protocols, NIHSS, stroke alerts, quality indicators, educational materials, and community resources is required. Essential Functions Collects health data systematically, prioritizing based on patient needs, and involves family members. Develops individualized, evidence-based care plans reflecting current nursing practices. Implements interventions, including treatments, medications, emergency measures, and family-centered care. Evaluates patient progress, documents care, and reviews the effectiveness of care plans to improve outcomes. Assesses own practice against standards, maintains current knowledge, and evaluates nursing quality. Applies ethical principles, respects cultural diversity, and promotes a healthy work environment. Collaborates with healthcare team members, mentors peers, and participates in professional development. Participates in developing and evaluating standards of care, using research to improve practice and patient outcomes. Considers safety, effectiveness, and cost-efficiency in patient care, utilizing resources effectively. Education Bachelor's degree in nursing (BSN) preferred. Diploma or ADN hires must complete a BSN within 60 months or have 10 years of RN experience. All staff responsible for stroke patients must meet specific educational requirements prior to start. Experience More than 10 months of med-surg or acute specialty experience required. One year RN experience required for float positions. Licenses and Certifications Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required. Arizona RN license or compact state license required upon hire. Unit-specific national certification preferred.
