The position of Maintainer I is responsible for performing general janitorial, custodial, housekeeping, grounds keeping or maintenance tasks in a state educational institution. Responsibilities
Performs routine manual tasks involved in the maintenance, repair or beautification of campus grounds or roads, such as cutting grass, weeds or brush; cleaning culverts, gutters, catch-basins, drains or ditches; loading and unloading vehicles; moving and setting up furniture; spreading sand, gravel, loam or asphalt; digging ditches or post-holes; setting or pulling posts; repairing guardrails or fences; patching concrete or asphalt surfaces; maintaining, erecting or repairing signs; cleaning or marking roadways for parking lots; erecting or dismantling snow fences; painting fences, posts, guardrails or building exteriors. a. Plants, seeds, transplants, removes, prunes, trims, waters, sprays or fertilizes trees, shrubbery, grass, plants or flowers; participates in the propagation, growth and care of flowers, plant and shrubs; assists in planning and executing horticultural designs for grounds beautification. b. Sweeps sidewalks, rakes and collects leaves, collects and hauls debris or rubbish, shovels snow, sands roadways or walkways; performs other manual tasks involved with snow removal, control and disposal.
Cleans offices, rooms, corridors and other spaces in campus buildings by following proper cleaning techniques and procedures in order to assure appropriate cleanliness safety standards. Required duties include the following: a. Cleans carpets, waxes, polishes and buffs floors; maintains equipment associated with these cleaning functions. b. Washes windows, woodwork, toilets, lavatories, washrooms and fixtures, appliances, dusts and polishes furniture. c. Empties and cleans waste barrels, garbage cans and other waste and trash receptacles; transports waste to dumpster and maintains area surrounding dumpster. d. Sweeps and cleans walks, rakes leaves, shovels snow, picks up trash and generally assists in keeping immediately adjacent outside premises in an orderly condition.
Moves furniture and may be required to receive and disburse deliveries by hand or hand-truck to assure appropriate and secure placement and/or storage.
Organizes and maintains appropriate supply of cleaning supplies and equipment by conducting regular inventories and submitting requisitions for replacements to the designated supervisor.
Locks and unlocks premises and performs other similar security tasks to assure the safety of the building.
Makes general repairs of a simple nature using various hand tools to assure a well-maintained building; reports other repair problems and needs to the designated supervisor using established procedures.
Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED AT HIRE: Knowledge of the methods followed in building custodial, maintenance, grounds keeping and storekeeping work. Knowledge of the types and uses of materials, tools and equipment used in building, maintenance, grounds keeping and storekeeping work. Knowledge of the terminology and standard abbreviations used in connection with grounds keeping Knowledge of the proper care and maintenance of equipment used in grounds keeping. Knowledge of the types and uses of hand-held power tools such as chain saws, hedge trimmers, etc Ability to operate and care for electric sweepers, mop wringers, brushes and other household cleaning equipment. Ability to make general repairs of a simple nature. Ability to communicate verbally and in writing and to follow simple oral and written instructions. Physical ability to withstand the strain of performing manual tasks. Working knowledge of the type, properties, quality and uses of cleaning supplies and equipment and their effect on the various types of construction and finishes; experience in institutional housekeeping and allied equipment. Ability to deal tactfully with others. Successful experience in janitorial and related cleaning fields, preferred. Ability to work a flexible schedule. QUALIFICATIONS ACQUIRED ON JOB: Knowledge of campus and specific work area(s) assigned to. Increased knowledge of the use of hand tools and janitorial equipment and supplies. Knowledge of campus operations, systems and policies. Increased ability to assess and address maintenance and cleaning problems. This is a full-time position within the AFSCMEUnion. Salary for this position is $43,505.28. Hours for this position are Monday-Friday 7am-3:30pm.
