SENIOR ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENTIST (SPECIALIST)
Caltrans District 3 is hiring a Senior Environmental Scientist (Specialist) to support transportation projects across California.

Location: 4050 Taylor Street, San Diego, CA 92110
Salary: $7,820.00 – $10,732.00 per month (new to state candidates receive minimum salary of the classification)
Contract: 12‑Month Limited Term – Full Time
Telework: In‑Office

Responsibilities Caltrans Environmental Scientists conduct a broad range of work concerning environmental issues related to protecting California's resources as related to transportation projects. Responsibilities include:
Perform field analyses and prepare environmental documents and technical studies.
Compile environmental permitting packages and regulatory permits.
Ensure compliance with environmental laws and regulations.
Conduct planning, mitigation, and protection activities.
Analyze data on the environmental effects of transportation projects.
Prepare and review CEQA/NEPA and other technical documents to determine project effects.
Implement mitigation strategies to lessen project impacts.
Establish and maintain professional relationships with internal partners, regulatory agencies, local partners, and stakeholders.
Act as a mentor to lower‑level staff and provide technical consultation.
Manage site visits, including remote and uneven terrain driving as required.
Qualifications Position requires eligibility and skills as outlined below.
Eligibility: must be on state examination list; new to state candidates must complete the Senior Environmental Scientist (Specialist) exam.
Driver’s license: possession of a valid driver’s license is required when operating a state‑owned or leased vehicle.
Scientific knowledge: experience with environmental clearance documents and environmental laws.
Technical expertise: experience leading technical studies and providing guidance to management and external agencies.
