Position Summary The Physical Therapist at Hurley Medical Center's Inpatient Rehabilitation Facility plays a crucial role in the interdisciplinary team, providing comprehensive physical therapy services to patients recovering from various injuries, illnesses, or surgeries. The primary goal is to help patients achieve their highest level of functional independence, reduce pain, and improve overall quality of life through evidence-based practice and individualized treatment plans.

Key Responsibilities

Patient Assessment:

Conduct thorough initial and ongoing assessments of patients' physical abilities, limitations, pain levels, and functional status, utilizing standardized tests and clinical observation.

Treatment Planning:

Develop and implement individualized, goal-oriented treatment plans in collaboration with patients, families, and the multidisciplinary team (e.g., occupational therapists, speech-language pathologists, nurses, physicians).

Therapeutic Interventions:

Provide a wide range of therapeutic interventions, including but not limited to:

Therapeutic exercises (strengthening, flexibility, endurance, balance)

Gait training and mobility training

Manual therapy techniques

Modalities (e.g., heat, cold, electrical stimulation)

Patient and family education regarding injury prevention, home exercise programs, and adaptive equipment.

Functional training for activities of daily living (ADLs) and instrumental activities of daily living (IADLs).

Documentation:

Maintain accurate, timely, and complete documentation of patient evaluations, treatment plans, progress notes, and discharge summaries in accordance with facility policies, state, and federal regulations.

Collaboration and Communication:

Actively participate in team meetings, case conferences, and communicate effectively with all members of the healthcare team to ensure coordinated and holistic patient care.

Discharge Planning:

Collaborate with the team and patients/families to develop appropriate discharge plans, including recommendations for follow-up therapy, durable medical equipment (DME), and community resources.

Supervision:

May provide clinical supervision and mentorship to physical therapist assistants, rehabilitation aides, and students as assigned.

Professional Development:

Engage in continuous professional development activities to stay current with best practices, new technologies, and advancements in the field of physical therapy.

Safety and Compliance:

Adhere to all facility policies and procedures, including infection control, safety guidelines, and ethical standards of practice.

Required Qualifications

Education:

Graduate of an accredited Physical Therapy program (Doctor of Physical Therapy or Master's/Bachelor's degree in Physical Therapy).

Licensure:

Current and valid Physical Therapist license in the State of Michigan.

Experience:

Previous experience in an inpatient rehabilitation setting is preferred. New graduates with strong clinical affiliations in inpatient rehabilitation will be considered.

Skills:

Strong clinical reasoning and problem-solving skills.

Excellent communication (verbal and written) and interpersonal skills.

Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.

Compassionate and patient-centered approach to care.

Proficiency in electronic health record (EHR) systems.

Physical Requirements:

Ability to stand, walk, lift, push, pull, and assist patients with transfers and mobility for extended periods.
