About Us Mary & Elizabeth Hospital, part of UofL Health, is a 298-bed, full-service hospital. The hospital offers a full range of orthopedic, cardiac, neurological, surgical, vascular, behavioral health, rehabilitative and 24/7 emergency services. Mary & Elizabeth Hospital is home to the University of Louisville School of Medicine’s Family Medicine residency training program. The hospital has received DNV Certification in the areas of Shoulder Surgery and Advanced Foot & Ankle Surgery, and has been recognized as one of the first health care facilities in the nation to receive a Blue Distinction® Center for bariatric surgery.

Essential Functions

Conducts systematic, continuous and comprehensive assessments of patient health status from admission or encounter to discharge across the care continuum to ensure patient safety.

Independently administers medications per licensure authority, assesses and reassesses the effects of these medications, and documents administration in a timely manner per policies and regulatory requirements.

In collaboration with patient and family, plans care using current scientific knowledge, theory, and care standards within the nursing interventions and outcomes framework and national patient safety goals.

Identifies and prioritizes patient problems based on assessment data, patient safety considerations, and nursing interventions.

Implements nursing care interventions to meet patient and family centered health care needs.

Assesses, conducts and evaluates outcomes of patient and family teaching, from admission to discharge, reflecting sensitivity to age, learning needs and cultural background.

Evaluates care by performing systematic reviews of patient/family responses to interventions; revises the multi-disciplinary plan of care in collaboration with other team members.

Serves as an advocate for the patient and family, demonstrates respect for their rights, prepares the patient and family for discharge, and obtains feedback to promote positive patient satisfaction outcomes.

Works collaboratively with unlicensed assistive healthcare providers, per regulatory and legal requirements, ensuring safe patient care delivery.

Other Functions

Demonstrates professional conduct and appearance.

Orients new members of the healthcare team and supervises students.

May act in the role of relief charge nurse when the unit needs arise.

Maintains professional competency through continuing education, ongoing competency demonstration, licensure and professional activities.

Participates in evidence‑based practice activities, such as journal clubs.

Communicates constructively using core behavioral standards.

Performs duties in a cost‑effective manner.

Maintains compliance with all company policies, procedures and standards of conduct.

Complies with HIPAA privacy and security requirements.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Education

Associate’s Degree in Nursing from an accredited program (required).

All new‑hire Associate Degree Registered Nurses are required to start an approved BSN program within 1 year of hire and complete it within 3 years of hire.

Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (preferred).

Experience

All new RN graduates will participate in the Nurse Residency program and must successfully complete all activities (required).

Two years of hospital patient care experience (preferred).

Licensure

Current KY RN licensure or compact license with privileges to work in Kentucky (required).

Certification

Basic Life Saving (BLS) accredited by the American Heart Association (required).

Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) may be required for specific clinical areas.

Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) may be required for specific clinical areas.

Note Additional, specialized certifications may be required or preferred based on unit.
