Diagnostic Medical Sonographer II Employment Type:

Overview The Diagnostic Medical Sonographer II reviews Physician Orders and prepares patients for ultrasound exams. Performs specialized medical ultrasound examinations to obtain high quality images for diagnostic interpretation in accordance with departmental protocols. Also performs vascular exams under direct supervision of an RVT or Radiologist, and assists physicians with US-guided procedures.

Minimum Education, Licensure/Certification, and Experience

Completion of an accredited Medical Sonography program.

Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.

Registered with the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) with certification in ABD or OB/GYN and Vascular (or RVT Registry‑eligible with certification within one year of hire).

One year of experience as a Diagnostic Medical Sonographer preferred.

Willingness to train in Breast Imaging.

Special Skills / Aptitudes

In‑depth knowledge of cross‑sectional anatomy.

Ability to produce and evaluate high‑quality images.

Knowledge of abdominal, gynecological, superficial, and vascular anatomy.

Stays current in all registry modalities (RDMS, RVT).

Excellent customer‑service orientation for interacting with hospital personnel and community groups.

Duties / Responsibilities

Interpret physician orders and scan patients using proper positioning techniques.

Provide high‑quality images that meet department protocol expectations.

Prepare sterile field and assist physicians with procedures such as biopsies, cyst punctures, and abscess drainage.

Relay preliminary reports from radiologists to physicians or nursing units.

Initiate records for all patients undergoing ultrasound, including personal data and tests ordered.

Operate ultrasonic scanner and workstation.

Provide physical comfort and emotional support for patients.

Transport patients to the Radiology Department and assist from wheelchairs or stretchers to scanning tables.

Provide information to nursing units about correct patient preparation and coordinate scanning with other test orders.

Contact physician offices to clarify orders and obtain additional information; coordinate with outreach hospital personnel.

Perform duties under direction of the radiologist, following established ultrasound testing procedures.

Submit reporting of in‑patient and outpatient scans to provide accurate data of volume and trends for future planning.

Attend mandatory meetings and in‑services as required by the hospital and/or the Department of Radiology.

Clean and maintain equipment.

Maintain up‑to‑date knowledge of ultrasound scanning trends.

Under supervision of the radiologist and an RVT, perform vascular exams such as venous, peripheral arterial, carotid, and mapping studies.
