Overview
Intensive Care Unit (ICU) Veterinary Nurse (Overnight Shift) role at PetVet Care Centers. Intensive Care Unit veterinary technicians are under the direct guidance and supervision of the doctor. Incumbents assist practitioners to the fullest extent to improve the quality of care and efficiency by relieving them of technical work and administrative detail for the patients of Santa Cruz Veterinary Hospital. Responsibilities
Prepare for shift by rounding with the previous ICU tech to familiarize yourself with all ICU patients and provide care, treatment, assessment, and monitoring. Monitor patient charts and complete upcoming treatments, including preparing medications (oral and injectable), obtaining samples for diagnostics, and ensuring patient bedding, water, and food are managed as appropriate. Ensure accurate and timely charting of all patient information and monitor mentation for changes. Monitor vital signs and alert the doctor to major changes. Input and update progress notes and verify treatments with the team. Check charts frequently for doctor notes and ensure assistant-assisted tasks are accurately recorded. Proficiently place IVCs, monitor site integrity, and document IVC timeframe and longevity. Perform diagnostics and procedures (e.g., blood pressure, bloodwork, urine collection, radiographs) with adherence to safety and authorization requirements. Collect and prepare samples for send-out labs and ensure proper collection techniques. Calculate and administer medications and IV fluids, including CRIs, doses, and rates. Assist the doctor with treatments (e.g., NG/NE tubes, catheters, nasal oxygen, telemetry) and participate in CPR/code scenarios as directed. Assist with intubation and administration of ER drugs; document CPR/code events. Maintain ICU workflow to ensure timely treatments and patient rest, and coordinate with assistants to keep the ICU organized and stocked. Prepare patients for discharge when applicable, including medications, prescriptions, and discharge instructions, and ensure patient belongings leave with the patient. When possible, assist with post-discharge kennel cleaning. Advancement
Veterinary Technicians will be trained to their potential. If interested in a specific field (e.g., oncology or anesthesiology), ongoing education may be supported through subsidies or in-practice training. Qualifications
RVT or equivalent; minimum 3-5 years of critical care, intensive care, and emergency experience Knowledge of care procedures, ordering medical supplies, and running CPRs Knowledge of veterinary instruments, medications, and equipment; sterilization techniques Familiarity with treatments and procedures used in the ICU to support DVM Skills
TPR/physical assessment Drug administration and dosage calculation Venipuncture and catheter placement (venous and urinary) Cystocentesis (both blind and ultrasound-guided) CPR and critical care/emergency assessment ECG interpretation, radiology, anesthesiology Post-surgical care/monitoring Laboratory tests (CBC, Chemistry, UA, viral tests, coagulation tests, Idexx/Antech labs) Equipment setup and monitoring (Doppler, Cardell, SpO2, ECG, IV pumps, anesthesia machines, suction, crash cart, O2 cage) Infectious/zoonotic disease knowledge and client communication Customer service and updates to clients Physical Effort
Work may involve lifting up to 100 lbs with assistance, standing or walking for extended periods, and working in a bent position. Working Conditions
