Overview
Cardiopulmonary Rehab Exercise Physiologist must possess the needed skills to independently assess and supervise patients exercising in Cardiac and Pulmonary Rehabilitation and complete the necessary office workflow and documentation required. The Exercise Physiologist is responsible for communicating critical results to appropriate physicians. The Cardiopulmonary Rehab Exercise Physiologist will receive additional training for Stress Lab Testing for the purpose of coverage as needed per staffing plan. Therefore, after training, the CP Rehab Exercise Physiologist is responsible for supervision of stress testing performed in the Cardiology Department. The Exercise Physiologist must possess the cognitive skills needed to competently assess patients, develop appropriate care plans, instruct and supervise exercise prescriptions for Cardiac and Pulmonary patients and, once trained, must be able to perform treadmill exercise stress tests, nuclear stress testing, stress echocardiograms and assist with event monitor set up and evaluation, with minimal physician oversight, and in accordance with policies and procedures and AACVPR Accreditation standards and CMS Guidelines for Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation. Additionally, the Exercise Physiologist is responsible for other tasks assigned by the Manager in accordance with the Exercise Physiologist scope of practice and training.
Responsibilities
Cardiac/Pulmonary Rehab Patient Care . Prepares appropriate hardware setup for basic and special cardiovascular procedures, specific isokinetic testing and/or rehabilitation. Performs specific testing and therapeutic protocols based upon an analysis of the patient by the Exercise Specialist. Will assist in the therapeutic application of physical agents, various protocols and other procedures and/or modalities as requested by RN or Physician. Ensures that specific protocols and extensive programs have been appropriately explained to each patient and monitors their performance for compliance. Assesses patients in order to determine their abilities for further progress in Cardiac or Pulmonary Rehabilitation. Consults with the RN and/or Physician regarding specific testing and exercise protocols. Reports to the physician of all unusual reactions of patients receiving testing and/or treatments. Reports all incidents which occur involving the patient, employee, or visitor by completing the appropriate incident report form and having it filed according to hospital policy.
Stress Lab Patient Care . Screens for indications and contraindications from the medical history, baseline 12-lead ECG, and patient status. Determines if the appropriate test was ordered, and has knowledge of alternative testing options. Demonstrates knowledge of when physician supervision is necessary. Prepares the patient for stress testing, and administers the stress test. Demonstrates knowledge of when to terminate a test, and is prepared for and rapidly responds to any emergencies that may arise.
Patient Education and Continuum of Care . Explains exercise program or physiological testing procedures to participants. Provides instructions to the patient and family members regarding follow up procedures.
Documentation . Completes all relevant documentation pertaining to stress testing and rehabilitation according to departmental policies and procedures. Assists in the generation of appropriate reports and functional capacity assessment. Consults with Physician or RN regarding test results and exercise protocols. Writes progress notes on the patient records indicating extent to which goals have been met. Completes the appropriate patient billing documentation as required.
Education . Explains procedures and goals to the patient prior to testing, exercise protocols and/or treatment. Assesses patient musculoskeletal abilities in order to assist physician to provide proper individualized exercise prescriptions. Assists with the collection of statistical data for quality assurance program and functional outcome analysis. Assumes responsibility for general maintenance and care of all exercise equipment. Assists in the review of departmental policies and procedures regarding various exercises and testing protocols.
Other Duties and Responsibilities
Demonstrates competency in Infection Prevention/Control practices: control measures designed to prevent the spread of infectious diseases, implements and maintains isolation techniques, and follows hand hygiene policies and utilizes personal protective equipment as indicated.
Assists with maintenance, calibration, infection prevention and cleaning of CR/PR equipment.

Certifications and Licensures Credential:
ACSM: Am College of Sports Medicine
Equivalent Experience:
ACSM-CEP (American College of Sports Medicine Certified Clinical Exercise Physiologist) preferred, or credential obtained within 12 months of hire or transfer, a six month grace period if credential is not obtained on the first attempt.

Experience, Training and Skills Previous experience and knowledge of isokinetic testing, evaluation, and functional capacity evaluations.
Physical/Mental Requirements and Typical Working Conditions Exposure to stressful situations, including those involving public contact, as well as trauma, grief and death. Able to wear personal protective equipment that includes latex materials or appropriate substitute if required for your position. Is able to move freely about facility with or without an assisted device and must be able to perform the functions of the job as outlined in the job description. Overall vision and hearing is necessary with or without assisted device(s). Frequently required to sit/stand/walk for long periods of time. May require frequent postural changes such as stooping, kneeling or crouching. Some exposure to blood borne pathogens and other potentially infectious material. Must follow MyMichigan Health bloodborne pathogen and TB testing as required. Ability to handle multiple tasks, get along with others, work independently, regular and predictable attendance and ability to stay awake. Overall dexterity is required including handling, reaching, grasping, fingering and feeling. May require repetition of these movements on a regular to frequent basis.

Medium. Must be able to occasionally (0-33% of the workday) lift or carry 21-50 lbs., frequently 34-66% of the workday 20 lbs. and/or Walk/Stand/Push/Pull of Arm/Leg controls and constantly (67-100% of the workday) 10 lbs.
