Introduction
The DESPP Facilities Operations Unit provides effective and efficient planning, management, maintenance, and operation for all facilities within the agency. The facilities unit operates from the Mulcahy complex located in Meriden and travels throughout the state to service over 70 buildings on 27 sites. The Connecticut Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection (DESPP) is hiring multiple Skilled Maintainers located in Meriden and Windsor Locks.

POSITION DETAILS We are hiring 3 full‑time (40 hour per week) positions, with 2 based at 294 Colony Street in Meriden and 1 based at 24 Perimeter Road in Windsor Locks, however this recruitment can be used statewide for all DESPP facilities. Schedule for this position will primarily be on first shift with Monday‑Friday schedule between the hours of 7:00 am and 3:30 pm. In this role you would work in a 24/7 environment and be responsible for performing a full range of Skilled Maintainer duties as assigned by the Supervisor. In this class you must be willing to accept assignment to emergency duties whenever your services are needed and must participate in mandatory winter overtime which occurs from November 1 through April 30 each year. This class is accountable for performing basic tasks of a skilled nature in our Facilities Operations Unit including building and equipment maintenance (operational and remedial), landscaping and grounds keeping duties, and operation of complex mechanical equipment.
Specific duties of this position include, but are not limited to:
Performing grounds care/landscape maintenance
Perform semiskilled tasks in construction, maintenance, and mechanical repair of commercial buildings
Operating box truck, large dump trucks with trailer
Assisting other team members as needed
Snow and Ice Removal from Nov. 1 to April 30 annually (Mandatory)

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE Two (2) years of experience in one of the following areas: one of the skilled trades; landscape maintenance or vegetable gardening; operation of motor trucks or large buses. The experience area should reflect the needs of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED Graduation from a vocational or technical school with a diploma designating completion of subject requirements in a maintenance trade area may be substituted for the General Experience.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Commercial experience in plumbing, carpentry, custodial, electrical, HVAC, masonry and painting
Experience traveling to locations across the state
Experience troubleshooting mechanical issues
Experience maintaining electronic records of preventative maintenance, vehicle assignments, purchase requests and parts lists
Experience operating and maintaining equipment including zero‑turn mowers, string trimmers, hedge trimmers and chainsaws
Experience operating heavy‑duty pickup trucks with plow or salting equipment, wheeled loaders, skid loaders and dump trucks (5‑ton capacity and larger)
Experience creating and maintaining electronic work order records
Experience providing oral and written communication with internal and external stakeholders
Experience performing grounds maintenance including mowing, weeding, raking, shoveling and snow and ice removal
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS Incumbents in this class may be required by the appointing authority to possess and retain appropriate current licenses, permits and/or certifications.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS Incumbents in this class must have adequate physical strength, stamina, physical agility and visual and auditory acuity, and must maintain such physical fitness as to be able to perform the duties. A physical examination may be required.
WORKING CONDITIONS Incumbents in this class may be required to lift moderate to heavy weights and may be exposed to significant levels of dust, heat, noise, extreme weather conditions and risk of injury from equipment and assaultive and/or abusive individuals. The appointing authority may require completion of an asbestos removal program consistent with EPA guidelines for operations and maintenance during employment in this class. Incumbents may be required to use protective equipment such as respirators and safety goggles.
