Job Title Building Inspector
Position Overview Join our dynamic team as a Building Inspector where you'll play a vital role in ensuring the safety, compliance, and quality of construction projects within our communities. As a meticulous and detail-oriented professional, you will conduct thorough inspections of buildings and structures at various stages of construction, renovation, or alteration, ensuring adherence to local building codes, regulations, and standards.
Key Responsibilities
Conduct comprehensive inspections of residential, commercial, and industrial properties to verify compliance with building codes, zoning regulations, and other applicable standards.
Review building plans, blueprints, and specifications to assess compliance with regulatory requirements and identify potential issues or discrepancies and make arithmetic calculations rapidly and accurately.
Perform on-site inspections during different phases of construction to evaluate structural integrity, electrical, plumbing, HVAC systems, energy & green code, accessibility and overall safety measures.
Document inspection findings accurately and thoroughly, including any violations, deficiencies, or areas of non-compliance, and prepare detailed reports for stakeholders.
Collaborate with architects, engineers, contractors, and other stakeholders to address compliance issues, provide guidance on corrective actions, and ensure timely resolution of issues.
Respond to inquiries from property owners, contractors, and the public regarding building codes, regulations, and inspection processes.
Stay informed about changes in building codes, regulations, and industry best practices, and participate in training and professional development activities to maintain current knowledge and skills.
Assist in the enforcement of building codes and regulations by issuing citations, stop-work orders, or other enforcement actions, as necessary.
Provide guidance and support to colleagues and junior staff members and assist in the training of new inspectors as needed.
Represent the department and interact professionally with internal and external stakeholders, fostering positive and cooperative working relationships and promoting a culture of compliance and safety.
Issue permits for work to be performed.
Assist in the checking of building plans (upon obtaining ICC plan examiner certification).
Perform assigned duties within the supported agency’s guidance, culture, and approach.
Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Any combination equivalent to the experience and education that could likely provide the required knowledge and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required knowledge and abilities would be equivalent to graduation from high school and previous experience in building inspection, construction trades, construction management, or related field preferred.
Certification as a building inspector or ability to obtain certification within a specified timeframe.
ICC Certifications potentially to include: ICC Residential Building, ICC Commercial Building, ICC Residential Combination, ICC Commercial Combination, ICC Residential Mechanical/Electrical/Plumbing, ICC Commercial Mechanical/Electrical/Plumbing, etc.
Knowledge of local, state, and national building codes, regulations, and standards.
Strong analytical skills and attention to detail, with the ability to identify problems, evaluate options, and implement effective solutions.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact professionally with a diverse range of stakeholders.
Proficiency in using computer software and technology for documentation, reporting, and communication purposes.
Valid driver's license and ability to travel independently to various job sites as needed.
